Well the first time it happened, it was kinda weird but now its happened twicw so im concerned. It was cold outside, I went out, started the truck, put it in drive and went about 2 feet when my rear tires locked up. I thought maybe someone pulled a prank, put a log under my wheels or something, so I backed up a couple feet, put it in drive and it was fine. Well it just happened again at work. Same thing, cold outside, put it in gear and the wheels locked up, backed up a few feet, then went on with my drive. any ideas? Its concerning me cause I dont want the thing to lock up on me while going at a faster speed or on the streets.
sounds to me like you have a problem in your diff. do you have a limited slip rear? I would start by taking the cover off the rear and look at the gears.
could be the anti lock brakes if one of the sensors sees a different speed than the others it could apply a rear brake to gain traction. A good scan tool can read the sensor input to the computer. I once had a windstar that would turn on the antilock brakes at 5 mph when stopping . When i wached the sensors when stopping one sensor would go to 0mph at about 5mph the computer thought the wheel was locked up . I replaced the one sensor and all was fine.
If your Expy has 50K+, I'm willing ot bet it is teh parking brake assy. It is a drum brake type assy INSIDE one or both of the 2 rear rotor aeemblies (just follow the cable back)
For now, lube the hell out of the top of the assy (follow cable again) with a good spray lubricant and inside the two small slots on the backside of each rotor hub. It should free up a sticking shoe which is being kicked out by centrifugal force or a bad break return spring.
Mine hangs up occasionally only in reverse. I'm about to tackle it soon.
wow, seems like it could be a number of things, I think I will start with the lube job first, then on to the diff. It has 96000 miles on it and I dont think the diff. has been checked out. Thanks guys!!
