Idle Problem

here is the problem. this truck cranks on the first try every time runs strong and never hickups. i just put a new fuel filter and belt on it, the belt just because it needed it, the filter as a cheap attempt tofis the problem. the problem is that the truck will not idle.let me correct that on start up it idles fine, but if your goose the pedal it dies if you drive it and miss a down shift and let the rpms drop it will hesitate at 500 for a split second and then dead. i am really confused, but that is what this web site is all about, i hope. thankyou for any help and or advice, matt

Hi Matt, did you recently fuel it up? Sounds like you either got a dose of bad fuel, bad lift pump, air in the lines or the injection pump is taking a dump on you. Usually the bad fuel will show up for a while till its all used up or you doctor it up with power service or diesel kleen. The lift pump usually shows up with fuel leaking out the weep hole on the lift pump - search for test on lift pump. Air in the lines usually acts up at first start but seems to clear up after it runs for a bit and hard starting, rough idle. Injection pump is tough to single out - last resort. Hope this helps. --- out

Maybe the seal on the filter you just installed is not good. Usually when sometihng starts happening after service it is directly to the work performed. Did you fill the filter with straight diesel when you changed it? I would look at what you just did.

there was no service just before the problem, it was done to fix the problem, i think that it is bad diesel, i got a bunch of free diesel from a truck with a hole in his tank and the tankthat i put it in to hold it until i could fill up my big tank i think had some water and trash in it. i am going to try the big jug of diesel clean today and pray, if that is not it, i really dont want to think about what else it could be, ip.

The lift pump is still used no matter how many or which tank you are using.Judging by your last post it may well be bad fuel,in which case either drain it off,or as soon as its all used replace the fuel filter again. As for the additive you should be using it every time you fuel up,winter and summer.Good luck.

The lift pump is the stock mechanical fuel pump on the passenger side lower front of the engine.

Sounds like you have three electric pumps if I am reading your post right though.

If you drain the water seperator on the bottom of the fuel filter, do you get water out of it?
Or change the fuel filter and drain the filter in a clean pan and see what is in there besides fuel.

I hate to say it, but stalling after stabbing the throttle is almost always the injector pump.

Also, there isn't any fuel pump strainer that I've ever seen on these things... unless they're in the tanks.

i do have 3 electric pumps. when i took the old filter off it had a little water and some trash in it, but what do you expect after 30000 miles. i took a big jug of diesel klean and poured it in the 100 gallon tank, the tank that got the bad diesel. after 30 miles all is well again. truck doesnt die when it returns to idle. thank god for diesel klean. thankyou all for all of the great help and information, matt
