i had my timing checked today and it was pretty advanced 15*. so we got it down to 8.7 and called it good, shut it off picked up and go to start it to leave and the truck runs like crap and barly idles. i put the timing half way between where it was and new and runs better. what would cause the truck to run better way advanced and not good with the timing where it should be?
Oh yeah that one, so which hole did you/they put the magnetic pickup in, was a 20* offset dialed in, was the hot engine at 2000rpm steady.?????????
engine was hot. rpm varied mybe 75 rpm during(should of used the screw to set it) and yes 20* offset was put in the computer. when looking at the engine frome the front we turned the pump clockwise. is that advancing or retarding.
Turn to pax is advanced, turn to driver is retarded. 1/32" = about 4 degrees.
Did you use the upper or lower hole on the timing bracket........supposed to be upper for timing meter probe, the lower hole has a faint line next to it with an (0) there for harmonic balancer alignment with the strobe light.

it was the upper one. wow just a 1/32 is 4 degrees. as a pump gets older will it start to retard or advance. i would think as things wear out it would retard the timing. if the timing is to advanced can that lead to damage?
I just have a 'ghetto' timing setup. A diesel pulse adapter and a regular timing light. I'd be interested to see what kind of reading mine would give. Kinda like a second opinion.
Mine gets timed ghetto style all the time with no problems.
Regarding the pump getting older and retarding or advancing if the advance ring goes bad maybe, most timing problems would be assiciated with the injectors.
Old weak injectors fire early so overall timing is earlier than original IP set timing.
