LAST EDITED ON 27-Sep-01 AT 02:15 AM (EST)[p]85 F250 460 4x4, duel tanks. When I have the key on (starting the truck) it pumps fuel. When I let off the key, the fuel flow stops. I've replaced the EI,pick-up modelular, and checked the wire on the coil. When I turn the key on (not trying to start it)
the fuel relay clicks, and I don't hear the fuel pump kickin' in.
Why would the fuel pump kick in only when the starter is ingaged?
Also, when I'm driving uphill with a load, on the back tank, runs out of fuel? Please help... Deer hunting draws close!!
well im not sure on the whole fuel pump problem,, but i do beleive that your fuel tank problem is that your fuel switcher is allowing the fuel to pass by it and fill the front tank,, i beleive that their is a recall on this part,,, however ,, i do beleive that because of the year of your truck ,, like mine,, you are not included in the recall ,, dammit,,,, but i hope this helps...
I had problems before with the gas flowing to the rear tank. I replaced the fuel switch and it hasn't done it anymore.($110)
I'm wondering if the fuel relay switch is suppose to click when I turn the key on? I'm picking up a new one at 2:00 today. If this doesn't fix it, I'm replacing the coil. And if this doesn't fix it, I'm going to get an 80 gal. fuel tank and bypass all this crap.....what a headache!!!!!
Yes, the pump should fire when you turn the key, to pump the system up. If you do not attempt to start it, the pump will shut off automatically after a few seconds, but if you turn the key and the truck starts, it should keep running. If you fix the initial pump start problem, maybe that will fix the other problem too.
OK! I replaced the fuel relay switch, didn't fix it. The new switch relay taps now instead of clicks like the old one.
The fuel flow stops after it starts up and runs for a few seconds still. I didn't mention in my first post that I had done an overhaul on the carb, and put smaller jets in, because it was loading up at an idle. I replaced the 61's with 57's, and put a manual choke on it. This is when this problem started. It seems electrical all the way, but is there anything I might have done to cause this prob by messing with the carb?
OK!...Here's the deal..When I bought it, it seemed like there was something weird...maybe different cab...found out it has a 1 ton rearend, someone put the big fuel filter under the hood #####-backwards, and for an 85 in ,90 when I bought...9000 miles on it sounded fishy. But for a killer $...Hey! I don't have an electric fuel pump under the hood... duelies have their own, and I've heard that fuel pump relays are in alot of rigs do to saftey...blah, blah, blah. Everything worked fine before I worked on the carb....I just can't believe that an elecrical problem is the culprit, when I did physical stuff...gas stuff...you know?
I cann't help but, my spare parts van is a 87 E-350 ambulance, with a 460 CID. doul tanks. The tanks have fuel pumps inside.
the engine has a carberator. My book shows a third fuel pump for fuel injection.
I've heard of a recall on the tank switch , front tank over flowing .
I have an 80's (not totally sure but stickers etc.. point to 84) F250 that had a carb'd 460 and it had electric pumps in both tanks so at least some were sold that way, in my case the rear tank was crap so I ditched the switch and wired up the saddle tank's pump, mine had been the victim of an earlier cab swap and had no relay whatsoever so can't help you there.
Have you tried running 12 volt directly to the pump and seeing if the truck runs ok ? might be a good troubleshooting idea to get a set of wiring diagrams and break out your multi meter and single step that no juice in run but works in start condition if hot wiring it works.
As always must my $.02 worth (and we all know what that'll get you today)
