My wife's Jimmy continually losing tire pressure on the average of 15psi a week
per tire. the tires are about three years old with a fair amount rubber on them, mounted on stock aluminum rims the valve stems are tight no leeks. What can I do to stop the loss? I've wanted to use tire slime but i think the alum. is the problem.
If you live in a cold climate that sees snow, and your town uses any sort of road salt , then it will corrode the lip of the aluminum wheels.
I just tore mine down for the same reason, and couldn't believe how it works it's way between the bead of the tire and the wheel.
You have to remove the tires from the beads and polish the beads up, which will hopefully help the tires to seal. FWIW: A good tire man can probably reseat them, no problems.
This sounds really stupid, but my Crown Vic was doing the same thing. It turned out to be the valve stem cap. The rubber gasket on the inside was missing. (I was loosing about 15-20lbs a week). It's been two weeks now and no noticeable loss.
ps. the weather has been fluctuating from -10 to 35 degrees F
If you need to have valve stem caps on to keep the tires from going flat, you've got leaking Schraeder valves. The caps are to keep dirt/water out, not air in.
Funny thing only one tire was missing a cap for about a week, it held pressure better than the other three I've checked the valves all tight it seems the beads are the problem.
