Ok,so I need to vent before I put a boot up my sons,,,well you know what I mean.My oldest son is a junior in highschool and I just got a letter from his English teacher.Everything, and I mean everything that he has turned in,has been graded an A.So,you would think the kid is getting an A in the class right.Noooo,he has so many missing assignments that he is getting a D.I dont get it.The kid is smart,he has to be if every paper he turns in gets scored an A right. So,WHY so many missing papers! When I ask him about it,I get that same stupid comment that we all as parents have come to know and HATE!"I dont know"Man if I ever find the guy that originated that statement I am going to,,,,ARRRG!Ok,Im done venting.
Sounds like he is bored with the english class, try putting him in an advanced placement english class. When kids get bored with something they lose intrest, just like that toy they just had to have , 6 months later where is the toy? Or it could be a case of a boring english teacher.
You may be on to something there. My daughter went to the same school, and before she got her diploma she complained that the teachers lacked any compasion for the kids that were learning faster than the others. She became bored in a couple of her classes and actually had to make herself stay awake in class. What amazes me is that, here is a teacher who grades my sons papers, sees that the kid is very capable of doing the work, but has more or less said,oh well, you didnt jump through this hoop so you get a D.What a shame.
raging hermons? i don't know whats going on with these kids today they seem to think english is not important any more. forget the number 10 lesson they pick up the phone and call dyfs right away
I had this discussion with Michelle's Son & Daughter when they were in Grade 9.
Well Son, regarding your schooling, just remember it only affects you, not Me , not your Mother, not your Brother's or Sister's. You only.
So,because of the consequences that you will suffer from either :
not making your grades
or
making your grades, the result is for you to do decide.
Do you want a great paying job or not?
I suggest doing the best that you can.

As for Michelle's Son & Daughter.
Her Son never finished Grade 9 as he was kicked out of school for bullying other students.
He Daughter got her Grade 9 but,she screwed around in High School & ended up not finishing.
They both do okay at what they do BUT,they never spent enough time in school to learn the basic necessities of *living within their means* & as such work from week to week and never get ahead.
Go Figure !
In the "old days" English, or just about any of the other classes, would divide the kids into smart, medium and dumb classes. They would then be taught accordingly. About 10-15 years ago they were not allowed to do that anymore. So kids that really cared were in the same class as once who didn't. Forcing the teacher to teach to the lowest level. The benefit was supposed to be an increase in the kids self esteem because they were not singled out. I'm sure this has been a huge success.
Could this have anything to do with your desire to move to Texas? I know I moved around a fair bit while in elementary school, and as I look back I see a correlation between my grades, attitude, and the moves. Maybe he has problems with the move?
One last comment, I see you're upset because your son obviously has the brains and ability to do the work assigned, yet he gets a poor grade due to not turning assignments in. I suppose I see education as a whole, including learning responsibility, ability, the attempt to learn, as well as learning the subject. He is paying the price for not fulfilling the requirements of the overall process. Of course, I sense you know that, just resent the fact he is intelligent yet it seems that is not adequately taken into the equation of grading.
I wish you the best in resolving this issue. And yes, it all falls back to, "Kids, can't live with em, can't flog em......."
You just need to sit him down and spell it out for him, "hookt oN fonix werkt four mee."
Honestly, I can remember saying "I don't know" to my parents. Truth is, I did know, I just didn't feel up to doing it. Now, some years later, I'm a little over a year away from being an engineer. I was never good with high school english classes. By the time I got to college, I learned more in those classes than I ever did in high school. Kind of funny, I know.
Well, the kid is by no means lazy.He is one heck of a gifted artist,he takes advanced algebra(by choice!) The move, hmmm,I dont think that is it,I mean, from what he tells me,he is looking forward to the move.Man,I thought I knew what to do,until somebody mentioned,NO Flogging.Just kidding, relax,I dont beat my kids. But if it had been me,my dad would have beat my butt,a few times!
When I was back in high school, my parents tried pushing me to take this class and that, and all i ever did was do the exact opposite of what they told me, maybe your boy is pulling a little rebellion out of his sleeve!
Nah thats not it Preppy,My dad ruled with an iron fist, and I remember how much I hated that part of him,so I go out of my way to not force my kids to take classes that they dont want, nor do I whip them when they get bad grades. But it sure is frustrating when you have a kid that could be at the top of the honor roll, not turning in papers!
Bored or some bouts with depression? Lots of kids nowdays suffer from depression and the suicide rate for teens is pretty high. How are grades from his other classes? Check out teen depression on the net and watch for signs and symptoms. I'm not saying this IS what's going on, but.... worth a look now than regret something later. "I don't know" is a cop out and hides true reason that he may feel hard to understand or to discuss.
