Loc rights are autos, right? Like a detroit? How do those compare in tire wear to a spool? I understand the concept of coasting around corners, but any first hand experiance? thanks
Detroits, lock right, EZ locker, Aussie locker all still allow the outside tire to turn faster around a curve than the inside tire, therefore, tire wear is mimimized compared to a minispool, spool, or welded spiders. They will have more wear than an open diff though.
Loc rights are also not as strong as the detroit or others that replace the entire carrier, as the lock rights replace the spider gear assembly (if i remember correctly )
yes you are correct about the lock rights replacing the spider gears. I've grenaded two 9" rears and the carrier was the only thing that surrived, so that is one reason I went with the lock right. The other reason is that I previously had a mini spool in the rear and when I put 4.88 gears in I was surprised that my case was broken. the cast pinion bearing support was cracked and when I pulled out the shaft that holds the mini spool (or spider gears) in came apart in 3 pieces. At thatpoint I decided that it was time to replace the mini spool with something easier on the drivetrain. I think the road manners of the lock right are better than the detroit but the detroit is stronger. you realy need to think about how your rig is going to be used with how big of tire and how much horsepower it has before you decide on the locker to buy. you may need the strength of a detroit or a lock right or the equivalent may be more than enough. your particular driving style and habits play a major role in how well things will hold up too.
I still can't get past the title of this tread "locker over is"
maybe you should look a little closer, the "i" in your "is" is actually an "l" as in "limitedslip" or "locker" in his. my 2 cents.
prob not even worth that much.
