I own a 1981 F250 2wd Camper Special.
I'm replacing the rear and centre u-joints but I'm baffled as to how they come off. There are no snap rings or anything else showing.
There are little holes with I'm assuming plastic fill??At each bearing cap on the cast of the shaft.
Is there a proper way of removinf these.
I have the shaft off and in the vise in the shop, both u-joints being on that shaft.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Just did one of these today. Heat it up and that plastic stuff will come oozing right out of the holes, and the ujoint will come right out. The new joint will come with internal snap rings. Just clean all the plastic stuff out so the new one slides in easily.
Wow! I must say that in all of the different vehicles that I have come across, I have never seen those type of u-joints. Thanks for the info Lastchance. You always learn something new on the FTE site. Jake.
Let me tell you that this has to have been one of the weirdest job I've done.
That wax fills the whole groove inside the casting where the where the u-joint cap is.
It needs heating up to melt it out...then they still wouldn't come out.
So out came the torches and I cut them out.
Then trying to find the right u-joints was a chore.
I ended up buying u-joints with internal snap rings....
Just finnished putting them in.
I'll put the shaft back on in a bit.
On my F250 there is 3 u-joints..1 in the front,1 in the centre and 1 at the rear.
The centre and rear ones require the WAX or internal rings as the front one uses EXTERNAL snap rings making its removal much easier.
Again thanks for your help.
I know I'll be back...this site ROCKS!!!
I have seen joints like this in older (70's) full size GM cars. Usually a good smack or so with a hammer on a piece of cold roll and a reciever socket on the bottom would break the plastic bond at the snap ring groove and the bearing cap.
