Proportioning valve

Proportioning valve
I've got an 83 F100 with power brakes and I'm in the process of totaly overhauling the entire brake system because this truck has been inop for 7 years. My question is how can I clean out the proportining valve and also test it because I don't want to replace it if I don't have to. Costs to much at the dealer and local parts stores don't carry it. Any advice and direction would be appreciated.

I have never had one apart so I cannot help you there. I do know that you can get adjustable proportioning valves from JC Whitney for around 50 to 75 bucks, depending on whether or not you get the model with the gauge on it.

You may want to look into an aftermarket performance valve.
It seems to me I read about a valve that was available which allowed you to adjust the amount of braking force from front to rear that was used in some racing applications.
Though I don't recall exactly who made it, it should be easy to find using Metacrawler or some similar search engine online.
I CAN say for sure that bleeding out the brakes on a 1973 Gran Torino turned into a science fiction project - and brother, I hope you can avoid that!
Call around and find out if anyone in your area can pressure bleed brake systems... It's a good way to purge all the old fluid out of the system, and will give you a running start on balancing the system. Unequal pressure in the torino made a brake light come on at the panel, and I fought with that for weeks...
