Motocross Track Plans ???
or any idea how to get started? He wants to look at some ideas....get on his bobcat and go crazy.
Look at the land and see what's there naturally, or at least there already (it could be altered ground right now). I really like natural terrain courses, so I would use whatever I could. I would however do two things for sure. 1) have a perimeter flat path around the whole thing (and I'll explain why), and 2) put as much track length within the space as possible.
The perimeter path serves several purposes. If you have someone over who is new to riding, it gives them a place to learn without jumps, ruts or berms. If someone's bike breaks while on the back corner of the lot, they can push it out to the perimeter where it's either easier to push back, or can be retrieved by a Ford pickup truck. For that matter, it's good for getting to someone who's been hurt almost anywhere on the track.
If you can't really build a natural terrain track and you have to compress track length into a small space, like they do for a Supercross, go for the most bang for the buck. I would certainly have a long straight-away running diagonal accross the lot, to give at least one, all-out, through-the-gears run. Of course, you need to leave room at one end to allow a section of track for joining the two triangles you've just created (like cutting a sandwhich across corners). On the straight, one side (maybe a third of the width) could be kept mild - rolling rises - for new or little riders. The remaining width could have woops, jumps, ruts, or whatever else you need to challenge yourself.
As for the two triangles that are left, think about how you like to ride, and the kinds of features you like tackling. Mix it up with switch-backs, jumps landing into turns, 180s... things that make you focus. I like jumping downhill and down from a plateu, so I'd be sure to give myself a couple of those.
Probably smarter yet would be to leave options for changing the course, or making it ridable from either direction. Doing the same thng all the time not only causes ruts, it puts you in a rut. And that's the last thing you want to do with something as fun as dirt biking.

add the "com" after racingsmarter to get it to work. It wont let you post anything even resembling a link in this place.
