I wanted to have all my stereo stuff installed by a Pro as I'm not to comfortable pulling panels and chance breaking stuff on my new truck. But after my new head unit (Alpine IVA-D300) was installed, I have very little confidence in my local installer. For example, they didn't test it before giving me the vehicle and they forgot to connect some of the wires.
So, I'm considering installing the Amp, Subwoofer Box and new door and rear speakers myself. What do you guys think?
Does anyone have any tips on how and where to mount the amp and where to run the wiring to the HU and out to the battery?
How about door panel removal to get to the speakers?
ive seen people put smaller subs and the amp under the back seat, lets you still haul people and stuff. Its not that hard to install it, its not easy, but you should be fine. There have been a couple threads talking about the doors, or im sure someone else knows, DO NOT JUST YANK ON THEM!! Many people run the wires under the door sills (plastic/metal piece on the bottom of the door opening) It protects the wire pretty good, or you could run it under the carpet, but that leaves a small bulge. Try not to have the amp directly on the ground because snow/water could get in there and kill it. For the power wire try to use an excisting grommet in the firewall, but make sure that it doesnt mess with the pedals. good luck.
I dont know how much they changed them, but my 150 Scab for the front doors there are two trim pieces and then 2 screws, after that you have to lift up on them DO NOT pull out.
This threw me for a loop the first time cuz i was used to the older trucks, but the new way they mount the door panels makes it 10 times easier to remove/replace.
There are a lot of crew cab owners on here that have stuffed the subs behind the back seat. If you do a quick search you should find a few threads on it, and a few members have pics of the installs in their galleries that you could use as a reference. As far as the cabling is concerned, the power wire from the battery can be brought into the truck through a factory gromet located on the passenger side just under the big black box on the firewall. I can then be routed under the kickpanel and then under the door sill moulding. For RCA's from the headunit i choose to run them through the center of the truck staying in the low valleys that run along the drivers seat.
Best thing to do is to take your time running the wires and removing the panels and make sure you like the placement of everything before you put the panels back in.
Not sure if much or any was changed from 2004 but the following steps will remove the door panel.
1. Pull the plastic trim piece off on the front corner of the door.
2. Pop up the front of the door lock and window switch and remove the switch. Then disconnect the wires to the switch plate.
3. Remove the screw to the right of the door handle.
4. Pop out the door reflector and remove the screw behind it.
5. Lift the door panel up and off the door then disconnect the door light socket and set the panel to the side.
You should also be able to run your amp wires along the trough under the scuff or door sill plate then out the grommet to the engine department to the battery. Some will have you run both positive and negative to the battery but I have found that if you ground the amp as close to the amp it works better. Usually within 6 inches of the amp. Run your input wires down the opposite side of the truck to keep any change of interference down from being close to your power wires. Hope this helps a little.
If your truck is a Automatic, There will be a knock out where a Standard clutch pedal would have been for it under the steering wheel dash. The dealer sells a seal that goes right in the hole for your power to go threw.
Make sure you buy high guality wiring or you will pickup all kinds of noise.
