When starting the vehicle you must give it gas for it to start up, then you have to keep giving it gas for it to keep running(rough idle). However this does not happen everytime. It occurs about 2-3 times a month and usually after it has rained for a couple of days. Once the engine has warmed up then everything is fine. It will idle and start up fine. The guy at the Ford house seems to think its the air-fuel control/sensor? The funny thing is the check engine light has never come on. Unlike my contour which I can never keep the check engine off! Thanks for the help.

We are pleased you have chosen the best source for Fords!
It's likely the Idle Air Control solenoid, otherwise known as the IAC valve. These valves can become jammed due to carbon deposits and fail to provide air to the combustion chambers during idle. When you press on the accelerator, you open up the butterfly valve on the throttle body, which takes the IAC valve out of the loop. Do a site search on IAC replacement. Price range for a new one is about $70 - $120 depending on who you buy it from. Can be a DIY replacement job if you have a minimum degree of mechanical skill.
I have to agree with PaulC. I had the exact same thing happen to my 2001 Mustang GT Vert. I also noticed that it would act up after raining or foggy days. It also would make a funny hum when starting the motor up cold but would quit when I rolled the throttle a few times. Then one afternoon it wouldnt start and once it did I had to use the gas pedal to keep it running for a few minutes. I talked to my service advisor and he stated that moisture had gotten into the IAC valve (Obviously a recurring problem with some Fords). It was pulled into the shop and 30 mins later....fixed....under warranty of course.
I had the same thing happen, sometimes it wouldn't idle, it would need gas pedal down and pumped a little to get going. I finally went to the dealer and got the IAC valve and replaced it. Its a pain in the *** to get back there behind the throttle body, but you gotta do it. Be patient and use a lot of light; don't drop the two bolts that hold the valve on the tbody down behind the engine. I pulled my old one out and found it full of carbon, the needle valve was more or less just stuck, no movement. The new one you get will be a better make. While you are in there, clean out the back of the throttle body with the APPROVED cleaner. Look way back into the tbody and you'll see the hole where the IAC fits into. Clean that out too. Good luck and contact me if you need help.
