I think I am going crazy! I am taking my expy with 2500 miles back to the shop for the 7th time. There is a shake in the steering wheel at 72 mph+. The shop supervisor, and service supervisor says it doesn't exist or is normal road force. It als seems to be riding very rough at high speeds, 80 mph = rough bouncy ride, enought that my passenger seat shakes continuously. My cabin seems awfully loud, wind noises, and alot of whining. The seal on the passenger side keeps popping off. Is this at all normal. I also noticed today if I rev the engin to 1500 rpm, the whole truck shakes? It doesnt' seem right. So I am going back to the shop on Wednesday, probably to be sent away with the same answer: "Normal Road Force"... My passenger side mirror is loose, and clicks in the wind, I think it is about to fly off.. I have had a squeak in the Passenger side Airbag that only comes out when it is cold out.
So am I just nitpicking or what? I dont' think a $40,000 vehicle should ride like a 0 year old truck..
I just bought a 2000 EB 5.4 4x4 and I kissed 100 mph and it was like I wasnt moving. Smooth sailing. Now there have been times when the truck had a shake or shimmy but it never lasted for more than a few seconds.
Are your tires balanced? Tire pressure? Uneven load?
I have had the tires road force balanced 6 times, The problem still persists. I have had 3 of the 4 tires replaced, which is as far as the dealer seems to want to go.
The vibration or shimmy gets worst the faster I go, and it seems that any bump on the freeway is magnified into my steering wheel. This is the first vehicle that I have driven that rides this bad. I have had 2 F-150's, a ranger, a mustang, and 4 Ford vans.. No problems with steering wheel vibrations with any of them.
So, I have requested the paperwork for the DSB, and will see if that will solve the problem.
Do all expedition ride extremely rough, I mean mine is like riding in an old horse and buggy.

Couple things: 1) what year is this truck? I think there were TSB's for steering column nibble in both 03 and 04's. 2) I have an 04 with 24k miles and it's smooth as a baby's rear end. 3) some folks have reported problems with the stock tires, but replacing with a set of good tires such as Michelin LTX or Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo has solved the problem. Are you sure you want to go the DSB route already? I know, it can be tough to swallow, spending $600 on a set of tires for a new truck, but if that solved the problem, would you really rather deal with going to the DSB? I replaced my wife's Continentals on her Escape after about 18k miles. Tread was fine, but the ride was deteriorating and one tire was losing 10 psi/week. I had the choice of buying 2 new Crapinentals or getting 4 good tires and being done with it for probably 50k miles. I decided to go ahead and get a new set of Michelins at Costco.
1) I have a 2004 EB with 2500 miles on it. I first noticed the vibration on the drive home from the Dealer first Day. I had it in the shop the next day.. I do not want to buy new tires, just spent alot of money on a new vehicle. That and my wife is in nursing school, and we don't have alot of extra money right now. And what really gets me is that while my truck was in the shop, I test drove another Expeditoin to see if it shakes or vibrates, nothing, smooth ride. So, I have an appointment with the service department on Wednesday. I will keep working with them until the problem is solve, or the vehicle is replaced.
Tell them that you have been reviewing Ford Expedition owner message boards, and have been reading about quite a few complaints re: out of round Continental tires. If they still are reluctant to acknowledge the issue, YOU pick out another Expedition from dealer stock and take the service manager for a little ride on the highway. See if that one turns into an ultrasound cleaner at 72MPH. If it doesn't, politely ask the manager how the situation in your Expy is normal if they all don't do it.
I already took the service manager for a ride in a new 2005 while mine was in te shop. Didn't help the matter.. Thats why I am thinking DSB. I am so fed up with their crap, thought the thought of 6 months of arbitration is not pleasant.
Well, I tried a different dealer, they told me there was nothing they could do to fix the vibration. They just rotated and balanced the tires. I have been using my current dealer for a few years now, and they have been doing a good job. I think Ford knows about the problem but doesn't want to do anything about it.
I feel your pain brother, I too am having the same problem with my 04 and with my dealer. The same, except my shop foreman admits the vibration and says the only real fix he can see is me to pony up the difference between my "upgraded" Goodyear RT/S to Michilens. I've been through 6 new tires, 2 road force balances, and alot of heartache. I have a question though, how much weight balancing are they putting on your rear tires. I have on my left rear 2 oz. on the outside and 1.5 on the inside, on right rear, 1.75 on outside, and 1.5 on the inside. I think the problem is somewhere in the drivetrain, I asked my service writer to rotate the tires to prove my theory that with the rears up front the vibration would be severely exemplified. Of course he said that with inferior tires you are going to feel the vibration anyway. I'm just stuck because if I have another place do the rotation the dealer is going to point the finger to that and dismiss my claims. What a pickle.
Looks like we are in the same boat.. I am not sure what weights are on the tires, but I was given the Road Force Balance report, and from what I can tell the tires are within specs.
I am going again on Wednesday, I will suggest all the information given, and see what happens.
Do they have another Exp. on the lot that does not have the vibration, and do you think they would be willing to swap out the wheels and tires for a vibration test from both vehicles, if the vibration goes away, I believe a set of tires would be inline from the Dealer, no questions asked, also have them check that the wheel lug holes are centered into the wheels, I saw a wheel in the shop once that the lug holes where not centered in the wheel causing the wheel to be eccentric, talk about vibration, that vehicle even had 170,000 miles on it with factory wheels, go figure. Jack up the vehicle one wheel at a time and hand spin the wheel and tire, visually see if the tire goes up and down when spinning by hand. Could also be broken belts in the sidewalls, which you won't see spinning by hand, but might feel a lump on the sidewall.
Just some thoughts..... Broken Wire
broken wire may be on to something with the rims...
I got new tires on our Expy at the 80 mile mark. The shop that installed the tires ran the rims (by themselves) on the balance machine. One of the wheels is at the edge of the tolerance for roundness. They told me that they could get the tire/wheel combo balanced, but that if I have any problems to take the Expy back and get a new rim.
