I have a 81 F150, i only get 11.5-12mpg if i'm lucky. The engine has about 34k miles. It has a .504 lift cam with a split duration, it has a high rise edelbrock intake, and a holley 600cfm on top with a K&N filter, it also has the MSD box and coil. I want to put a 750cfm edelbrock or carter on it but i cant quite aford it yet. I drive between 550-650 miles a week and this gas milage is eating me alive. If anyone can give sugestions please do. I've thought of electric fans and water pump, but i dont know, i also want to put the A/C back on it for the summer.
Don't know if you have a 302, 351W, or a 460, but you will lose more gas mileage with a 750. Get a daily driver. You'll never get enough gas mileage to keep from being eaten alive by gas bills.
you are lucky i have an 86 f250 that gets 7mpg's when i'm going down hill and the wind is pushing me i have made no mods to my motor but have a 460 so be happy with your 11 mpgs
I'll vouch for that, I have a 302 with "hop-up" parts(edelbrock performer intake, edelbrock 650 carb, mild comp cam, comp roller-tip 1:6 ratio rockers, headers, dual exhaust, no emissions) and I get 12-15 if I'm VERY mild with the heavy acceleration and the truck is empty. One advantage I have is that my truck used to have the 300 6 which gives me a rearend with a high ratio (3.11 vs the 302 stock rearend of 3.45 or 3.85 I believe, correct me if this is wrong) so though torque downlow isn't amazing, it straight hauls *** on the highway and turns lower revs doing 60-85 so the mileage is slightly better than an original 302 truck, just something to consider. A good gas mileage daily driver really is a must for heavy commuting, you have an old truck and even though they are great vehicles, they just aren't gas savers(especially if you want any real performance).... end of story.
The gas milage isnt that important any more b/c on saturday night i rearended a ford focus who inturn rearended a pt cruiser. It was all the pt's fault but i got most of the blame for it. The focus and i were on the inside lane on a 4 lane city street and the pt was in the outside lane. I looked right to see who was beside me and wheni looked back they were both stoped infornt of me and i had really no time to stop. My truck is pretty well done. Does anybody have a rolling chassis by chance. Thanks to all for your replys.

Your 1981 Ford F-150, if it came from the factory with a 302 V8, came with a 425CFM 2V carb mated to a C6 automatic with high gear ratio around 2.94/1. The original gas milage was around 13/14 MPG average (not highway). If you are getting 12 MPG with the aftermarket parts, you are doing very well.
Well, your wondering what all is messed up, the grill, hood, finders, radiator, fan, it pushed the motor and trans back some, and worst of it all both front forks of the frame are bent. So i dont know if it is really fixable, i'm going to try to take some of it off and also the belts and see if i can start it. If i can i'm going to barrow a trailer and tow it to my shop teachers body sop to see if it is fixable. It sucks really bad. The insurence wont take my truck unless i win a claim against the pt cruiser which i plan to do. And i wont accept anything less than $3500 in damages. And if they do take the truck i will buy it back and take my motor trans and rearend out and put it in something else. A buddy of mine said that he knows a guy that has a ford short bed about the body style of 92-96 with a six cyl and 5spd for $600 dollars. All it needs is a fuel pump. So i dont know exactly what will happen. There are several witnesses that saw the accident and are on my side so i will have to wait and see.
Tuff luck kid. But you won't be any happier with a 6 cylinder. If I were you I'd take the settlement money and get a 4 cylinder Ranger. These high gas prices are here to stay.
