problem carb

Im new member here with an 77 Ford 150, it has an 300 6, 4 spd man, its my new project truck but im having problems with the carb and recently when i was driving it.... gas started to drip from the carb and while i investigated it the fuel filter busted off and the tipp was still stuck inside the carb, so i used an easy out wrench to pull it out "in which i did" but i decided to to gut it open to clean out the inside cause when i would go down the road the truck would have no power and ever time i shift into 2nd to 3rd i would have to floor it so im thinkin the choke is bad or something, i have not yet got a carb kit for it but when i was cleanin the inside and when i installed it, i started the truck and gas came all over the exhaust manifold, i tightened the new fuel filter and hose but it still does that. When i was cleaning out the carb a little bearing came out so far i have no idea where it goes, (now this is a single barrel carb) any suggestions so far im clueless?

Thread will be moved to the fuel delivery forum as it deals with carburetors.

Welcome to FTE!

I suggest finding an blow-up illustration of the carb and have a look for missing pieces from yours.

Hi,

Wow that was one looong sentence.

Where exactly is the fuel leak? Is it at the fitting that the filter screws into? There should be a washer/gasket there.

How far did you disassemble the carb? The small bearing could be the check ball under the squirter.

I recommend that you go to your local parts house and buy a rebuild kit and a few cans of carb cleaner. They are relatively cheap.

Rebuilding a carb can sound pretty intimidating but there's not much to it really. Just pay attention to how it comes apart so you can put it back together. Make sure everything is very clean. The kit will come with an exploded view diagram that helps and instructions for setting the float level.

If you run into problems you can always come here to post.

Good luck,
Lee

lee, lol i guess i type to long

Would that also be the problem with power lost cause i would have to floor it to shift gears? that bearing just came from no were cause i took off the three bolts to the top carb and the others and just pop the top off and i was just turning it over to get some of the particles out inside and a little bearing and i little groove came out it, i'm getting a carb kit for it today but i was wondering if the carb would be the problem for the engine not to kick in, first i thought it was the distributer but it still acted the same. Im only 18 years old so i'm still learning my way around fixing carbs & stuff.

Hi,

I would guess that the carb is the issue with your power loose.

I think it's great that you want to work on this. These type of skills are disappearing now a'days.

The diagram in the parts kit should show exactly where that check ball came from.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Your best bet is to ALWAYS take the carb off the engine before you take any of it apart. That check ball could have easily ended up in the manifold and cause serious damage to the engine.

As lee said, just take your time and pay very close attention to how things come apart. Make sure your gaskets go on correctly. On the single barrels it is common for the top gasket to get put on backwards blocking passages that cause drivability problems.

Shake the float while you have it apart to make sure that no fuel has made its way inside, making the float too heavy.

Good luck and keep us posted on the results. We'll be here if you have a question.

Take your time with the rebuild,
Doc

Update, about two days ago i purchased a carb kit with gaskets "the works" i took apart the carb one piece at a time (oh i finally found were that little bearing goes so i got that covered), after disassembling the whole carb i replaced the parts that needed to be replaced and put it together and i remembered were every part went but when i had it apart i got some carb cleaner and cleaned the inside also, now to my next problem, the diagram said torque the bolts about 14 ft lbs so i did making sure everything is secured and when i went to install the carb and started it up, the truck started rite up but gas was pouring above or rite in the middle of the throttle body spacer is, i changed the gaskets and secured them but i cant figure it out, the floater is good also. I'm wondering if i need another gasket,.. were the spacer above were the manifold is were the carb sits there. So far im lost??
