hi my buddy just bought a 1948 for f1 with a 49 3.9L v8 flathead. my question is how much trouble is it for him to convert to a 12 volt system? what all will he need to change and about how much will it cost?
You can get 12 volt starters for flatheads or use the 6v one. it will take the voltage. The generator needs to be re-done to 12 volts or an alternator conversion/setup is needed. Many use the GM one wire setup. All light bulbs need to be changed. The guages are 6v, so you need a step down device to make them still work. I've heard you need to change the starter solenoid, but I'm not sure you need to. The 6v wiring is ok, as long as it's in good condition, if not, rewire the truck.
oh another question he just bought the truck and the right headlight was burned out. we put a new one in ( no big deal) but the light is already burning up again. what could be a possible cause for this?
I suspect that the bulb he replaced it with, may be a 6014 12v bulb. They don't like the 6v amperage. If not, check the voltage going to the bulb. It should be no more than 6 volts. Some people like to actually run 8 volt batteries. 6v bulbs don't like 8 volts. Make sure it's got a good ground also. You might want to check the output of the generator to make sure it's not pumping more than 6volts and also boiling the battery.
