Ok...here is my problem. I have a 93 model with a 302 engine. Sometimes its a little slow to respond on acceleration. On hills it will instantly slow down and then it will downshift to get up to speed. Occassionally on warm and humid days it seems like things clog up all together and it will begin to surge either while driving down the road or most of the time from a stop. It takes it a bit to get going. The engine light never comes on and the mechanics cant seem to find anything and it never does it when I have a mechanic around. I really dont have a clue! Anyone else had this problem before? Anyone know what it could be? I would really appreciate the help! Thanks!
well how many miles on the motor. if your going up hill you should not be in OD anyway . what size tires are you running. when did you tune it up last with new plugs,wires,cap/rotor set the timing and replace fuel filter. you may also have a clogged catalitc converter. so by unbolting the exhaust manifolds from your Y pipe will tell you something right away. my 302 did this in a way to thats why i swaped in a 5.8 motor. now i dont have a problem going anywhere
All we have around here is hills...so I never run the OD. Not very long ago at all I did a tune up with new plugs, wires, dis. cap/rotor. The fuel filter was replaced not too long ago. Last summer I had my exhaust system done. They bored out the first Cat and replaced the second, then added a Flowmaster with dual pipes out the back. I run 31 x 10.5 tires. I have almost 170,000 miles on it. It normally runs fine but this reoccuring problem is a pest that really irritates me. I have not had a compression test done or the timing checked. I'll look into that. Thanks for your help!
DEFININTELY have the compression test done. Whatever the results are, it will lead you in the right direction, or at least give you some piece of mind. My 302 was doing the same thing. Topping out at 60, hitting big bridges at 60 and then cresting at 40 with no chance of accelerating any faster until the downhill.
After all of this, I was sure it was my tranny. Took it to a Cottman Transmission (chain shop...the "good" guy at the "good" trans shop robbed me before) and he said get out of here, it's your engine. Did the wires, cap, rotor, plugs and cats. Nothing.
Finally, gave in, went to shop. Timing was off, and the EGR was dirty. After that, a compression test showed low compression in 2 cylinders, and I got new heads for her (Jasper Warranty covered it). Runs great now.
