Interior light problems

I had a problem pop up this weekend with my interior lights. It seems that when I get into my truck close the door, and start up my interior lights do not go off. My door ajar warning light is also illuminated. I feel certain the problen is a malfunctioning door ajar switch in one of the four doors, and plan to check it out tomorrow. My problem is as I read the manual it says after replacing the defective switch to clear the error codes and test to make sure it is working as it should be. How do I clear the codes? Also could someone tell me what code reader I would need to check for error codes? I do not want to spend a fortune on a code reader. I have never used these before and need a little guidence. My truck is a 1999 F-250 crew cab.

Michelle,
Spray some WD40 in the door latch(es) and open and close the door(s) the problem should go away as well as the light on the dash... common SD problem.
Hope this helps.

Do what Atuobahn suggests. This is a big problem on Ford Rangers and I have seen it pop up on a couple of S/D's now as well. My daughter has the problem on her Ranger and the WD-40 trick works everytime.

If you do end up needing to clear the codes, disconnect your negative battery connection for an hour or so.

I had the same problem a few months ago. Some WD-40 did the trick. Should I have cleared any codes? I figured that no codes were thrown. Also, won't the code be cleared when you turn the truck off and reset the computer? Just wondering.

Thanks so much guys, I will try the WD 40. Wow that would sure be great if it works, it would save me much time in not having to remove the door panels to reach the door ajar switch. With my luck it would be the forth door I went into that had the bad switch.

Thanks Again

I would be willing to bet that it is the driver's door. It gets significantly more use than all of the others, Another thing to keep in mind is that if you drive around with the window down or operate the window when it is wet, water will find its way down there to the switch. Agian this will be a problem with the driver's door more so than with any of the others.

Replacing the swittch typically fixes the problem for 12 months or less before the problem re-occurs.

Good luck. Hope it works.

I did exactly as you said to do and the used a little WD 40 and the problem is now fixed. Thanks for all the help. I had already determined that it was the drivers door because when the system went to sleep, I could open the drivers door and the interior light would not come on, however if I opened any other door the system would awaken and the light would come on. Any way a little WD on the drivers door latch fixed the problem.

Thanks Guys for all the help, I am blessed to have friends like you.

Unfortunately it will become a regular maintenance item. You will likely have to do this periodically.

I guess I have been lucky, my truck is a 99 model and this is the first problem I have ever had with this. At least now I know to keep my WD close by for future use.
