is this a fuel accumulator?

hello, I'm posting this question here because, I think someone here can answer my question. I'm doing a EFI swap in an early bronco using parts from a 90 E350 van 5.8. There's a part between the tank and the high pressure pump. It's black and looks like a frame mounted fuel filter but no filter inside. The supply and the return lines run to it? I'm wondering if it acts as an accumulator and would it be a good idea to use it? And why does the return line run to it?
thanks for any replies

Was it on the drivers or passenger side? Is it a rectangular box, or a cylinder? The fuel filter would have been right under the driver's seat, with an IN from the tank and OUT to the fuel rail.

If the truck it came out of had dual tanks, (6 fuel line fittings) it's the tank selector valve. I've seen a similar valve on single tank trucks (4 fuel line fittings)...

86 thru 91 tank selectors are nutorious for failure... mine died too... i capped off the front tank lines. mine runs fine just using the rear tank.

thanks for the replies gents. It's mounted on the drivers side. The van only had one tank. Its not the fuel filter (which is mounted right after the hi-press. pump) It's black with an intergrated bracket that has two mounting bolts going to the frame. the bottom bowl unscrews link a filter but the only thing inside is a down tube which goes to the fuel pump. It kinda looks like a small accumulator, in the event that you run your tank dry it would give you a small chance of not running the f/pump dry. but why does the smaller return line run back to it, then proceeds back to the tank?

Okay, that is part of the fuel return system.
