The factory low-mount swingaway mirrors on my '78 F-150 vibrate to the point of not being able to see clearly behind me. The mirror itself is sound but the mounting bracket on the door seems to provide all the vibration. Has anyone found a fix for these vibrating mirrors, besides replacing them? It doesn't look like there are any nuts or bolts that can be tightened.
It sounds like the pressed in retainers are loosening up and allowing the mirror bracket to vibrate .
Unfortunately, the bolts usually rust up to the steel fasteners not allowing the bolts to tighten but turn the retainer instead.
I noticed this a early in the life of my truck & even used anti-seize compound to hopefully avoid what you have.
It didn't work,so, I have purchased stainless steel bolts & nuts (for welding to the inside the door) for future replacement.
Are they really factory mirrors? I had some that appeared to be factory, but were much thinner and lighter metal - they shook terrible. I got some factory arms from a '78 and installed mirror heads from a '86 and they are great. I also drilled out the pressed in retainers and used bolts with washers and nuts inside the doors. It made a huge difference - they hardly shake at all at 70 mph.
