I bought a 2004 Passat GLX with 6,000 miles on it. Love the car but the transmission sometimes makes a "clunk" sound when driving at slow speeds then coming to a complete stop. Basically a second gear clunking into first gear thing. Had the dealership reset the throttle and transmission so it can adapt to my driving. They drove it and it didn't make the sound. It still does it some. Any suggestions

go back and make some noise. there is a update reflash for the tcm to stop that . off the top of my hat and being home i don't have access to the tsb number but know for sure its there and they have it. i've done maybe 2 dozen of them and every one has been happy. takes about a hour to do and reset the engine readiness codes when done. its only on the 04's
good luck i'll get the number in the am and post it.
I read on the passat forum about a TSB for the 04 and when I mentioned it to the service guy he said he didn't know anything about it. It does seem to be getting better as the trans is learning my driving style. I haven't heard of VW transmission problems, Honda seems to be the ones with the big transmission problems lately.
i'll still get the tsb number and post it. they have to go in and check the software number if it is under i beleive something 25 it gets up dated and the problem is gone. i open the shop door at 0730 est so it will be posted by 0800 for you. this trans would clunk something alfull into first gear down shifting from second.
vw did have some problems with the older style tranies with clutch pack seals but not for some time now have we had major problems. like every thing they last as long as you drive them the way they are made. this is a autobon car not a drag racer
ron good luck with it glx i hope the v6 one its great . if its a 1.8 turbo email me and i'll send some info on the oil changes you have to follow
its dated 2004-08-19 harsh down shifting

I really appreciate the help. I had 1.8t in my 02 Passat but with this one its a loaded GLX V6. Very smooth engine. Haven't had a front drive car for a couple of years so it seems to drive funny in the turns. I'll eventually get a Neuspeed sway bar and that shoud tighten up things. The car feels like its barely even moving when your cruising at 75 mph.
on the drivers door is a tire pressure sticker run them all the way up .some thing like 32 or 4 and 44or 9. the bar will not work as well as a good set of tires. the conties are junk and are worn out by 20k or a bit more. again i'll post from work the vw tsb number and recall code. if you ever have a ? email me . this goes for any of our web site people. if i don't have a answer i'll get it and post from work. this old tech is not going to take it with me when my time comes.

i wish you luck. they need to plug in and check the program software number if its 2224 and under you know what has to be done. upgrade to 2225 .
one other thing if you drive useing your left foot to brake try with out the stop lamp switch feeds the tcm telling it the car is stopped. 4 wire switch

I'm a right foot for everything guy. Since they reset the transmission it has been getting better as the week has gone on. I'm surprised at the gas mileage. Currently around 22mpg in mixed driving. My 1.8t was always close to 30 mpg.
good luck ron. its a good car. wait till you see the new one in the fall. 2.0 16 valve twin cam direct injection turbo. 207 hp and a 3.6 vr6 we are told. whole new car 6 speed auto
You're lucky that's the only noise it makes- my girlfriends beetle has this little habit of slamming into gear about four or five times shifting from drive. Usually it rolls back about ten feet first, though.
ok guys, to save some band width for ken. pm or email me with your ?'s and i'll try and help. model, engine, trans type. if its some thing i'm not overly sure of, i'll let you know and look it up at work in the dealer web site. i have no problems helping anyone out. esp a ford man.
what i can't do is advise on after market tuner use as vw stands dead fast against their use. they even have a statement as to it in the owners manaul.
