Let the others try new innovations and if they work...adopt 'em. Saves money I think.
Also...I had a 78 Datusn truck that had emblems on it that said "Datsun by Nissan". So they actually started changing the name back then. I owned an 87 Nissan "hardbody" that was a great vehicle for 196k miles....but the name was a misnomer. A tennis ball bounced on the hood when new and put a small ding in the sheet metal.

Yup the Allison has grade braking - tow/haul - and 5th gear lockout.

In addition the Allison also has a Defuel before shifting

I think the Torqshift was before the Allison, at least in light duty trucks.

I don't think so.

The 3 valve design is hardly technologically advanced.
Audi and VW have been using DOHC with 5V per cylinder for years.

Ford isn't hugely advanced in regards to technology, but they are far better than the "other 2", I mean pushrod V8's...

I stand corrected. The allison beat the TS by 2 years. But while the allison reverts to a 4 speed (lock out 5th) in tow mode the TS is still a 5 speed it just changes the shift points and gear ratio. In reality the TS has 6 forward gears.

The way it was explained to me by a Chevy rep at the Southern Farm Show was the Allison just uses a OD lockout for its tow haul mode and grade braking, just like a conventional auto w/OD.

Yup it does have a 5 gear lock-out. Which I guess could be useful for some folks. I've never used it pulling or otherwise. The grade braking on the Allison works on all gears - similiar to the TS. Driven in both with a load - like'em both. They both must caculate speed, load, etc. to figure out when to shift. The Allison's grade braking features starts working with a light tap on the brake.
So don't confuse the 5th gear lock-out with grade braking.

And don't forget the Allison has defuels before shifts. I've heard good and bad. Some people think it makes the shifts seem 'jerky' when accelerating without a load. Took me a couple miles to get used to it.

The Allison is a true 5 speed also. I heard that there was 2 3rd gears in the TS and it depended on weight and speed of which 1 of those 2 gears to use.

The one I drove, in Tow/Haul mode would still shift 4 times (remember you start in 1st already), I thought it had something like a "Low Range" OD for pulling (T/H mode), and a "High Range" OD for running light (normal).

Acceleration was definitely better w/T-H mode on, it did not feel like it had a 'hole' to climb out of when going uphill.

Ford's diesel tranny is actually a 6 speed. It has a different 3-4 upshift than the 5-4 downshift. In other words, one of the 4th gears is used solely for upshift, the other (with a different ratio) is used for downshift.

To put this thread back on track:
I had a 97 Ford f150 - sharp truck. That was a new body style year and they actually put the exaust before the rear wheel. That was a really great idea!

It had to be re-thought though. It turned out the the exhaust pitted the wheels. To Fords credit they took care of all the exhaust systems and usually all 4 wheels. I beleive that must have been a major expense on their part. But that was a good case of looking at the bigger picture and asking - 'Why do we do it this way.'

Very true. Technology wise, Ford is light-years ahead of GM and DaiChry. But comapre them to Honda, and they seem somewhat lackluster.
