I have a 95 F150 2wd 5spd. When I park I put it in gear and then put the emergency/parking brake on. I go to drive it the next time, I take off the parking brake, start the truck but it seems like the emergency brake sticks, til the engine overcomes it. Brakes work great, and when I have my right rear axle shaft replaced I was told my brakes were in great shape, so the shoes and drums are ok. Any ideas as to what to start checking to figure out this problem.
They may have been working fine, but the ebrake works by applying the rear brakes. So if it sticks, the rear brakes are applied and will be worn down as you drive. About the only way to know for sure is to jack up the rear and try to spin the wheels - if one turns hard, pull the drum and inspect the ebrake.
This "problem" has been happening since I bought the truck and the shop looked at the breaks 3 weeks ago and said they were fine. No burning smell while driving, it is just like they don't want to release til the engine overcomes them and then they are fine.
I don't know what else could be causing it. If it was a wheel bearing it would be leaking oil into the drum. I'd tell them to take the cables off and see for sure.
The most obvious thing would be a stuck cable. Apply the brakes, coat the exposed parts and ends of the cables with WD-40/PB Blaster and then follow with white grease. Work the pedal up and down a few times and see if the binding goes away.
