Just finishing my rebuild of a 1971 302. This is interesting because I WAS able to use heads from an 1989 302 with no trouble. As you guys recommended, I simply used the 71 lifters and push rods with the 89 heads....no fit problem thank goodness. However, I did have a lifter collapse shortly after the break in run of about 5 miles. I do not want to use new lifters and change the cam.....way too much time spent on this motor as is. So the question is: where can I buy a set of lifter springs and retaining clips to rebuild the old lifters? Sure as shootin, if I pull the manifold and just fix the one lifter, the others may collapse in the not too distant future. Any leads would be appreciated.
Just put a new lifter in.
You don't know if the fault is in the internals or the lifter body it's self - could be the body - you change internals - still have problem. Bet you'd be bummed.
That was my first thought, however, a buddy that seems to know alot about cams and lifters said that new lifters would chew up the cam in pretty short order. He also is the guy the recommended a full cam and lift kit. Do you agee or disagree?
OK. Sold me on the cam and lifter kit. Autozone has a Melling standard grind kit for $100. I plan to check with NAPA and Advance Auto also. Any suggestions on brand and grind? I will not go with anything that calls for more head work, but if I can get a slight improvement on HP at the same time, I would like to do that.
over 30 years and maybe 15 failed lifters - never had a came "wipe" a lobe on a replaced lifter. Provided the one being replaced just came apart - if the contact surface failed- you in for a new cam and lifters.
be sure to check break-in instructions for your cam - it's usually a little different than you might suspect.
I think your cam man needs to learn a lot more about what wipes out a cam lobe.A weak or broken V-spring, that lets the lifter float.A bend push-rod that
stops the lifer from turning. or the lifter fails internally. If you didn't have those v-spring check before installing them. Seems like,I remember ford did have some troubles with rocker stud coming up. So you may want to check those also if did not check before....my 2cents

I have always changed the lifters out on my vehicles. 300-6's are wicked hard on lifters dues to their location, and I have never had a replaced lifter damage the cam. The only time they need to be replaced together is when you replace the cam.
