Heater Assembly

What years of F100 had the same heater assembly as the 1965 F100? Was it just 1966 or were the previous years common?
(I'm getting cold without a heater).

I think 64 had the same heater also. My current 63 has a different style then my former 64 did - so I'm guessing there was a transition between 63 and 64.

64 and 65 are different. On the 64, the blower motor is installed fromthe rear of the box and the 66 on my 1 ton is on the front. Some research in the past show the 65 to be from the front as well. The air inlet on the 64 and 65 models as diffeent as well.

It is the 66. There are some parts to the heater that are interchangeable between 61 thru 66, for example the fan. But the main core of the heater only interchangeable between the 65 and 66. Probably should add a disclaimer, usually more knowledgeable member than i will indicate otherwise. Suggest going online to few Ford auto parts supplier's and request free catalog. Usually have good info in front about Ford truck VIN classification. Have one where demonstrates how to install vent and door weatherstripping.

Thanks for your replies. I'm having trouble tracking down a heater assembly. Now at least I know to ask for a 65 or 66.

toque....are you in need of the complete box and all or just a core???? In 65-6 there were 2 types of heaters used....delux has the water valve on the RH fender apron ....goes to 2 lower ***** on dash bolted to it...the core between the two is same though on 65-6
Rosati is correct in the blower moter location between 64 and earlier and 65-6.

Camperspecial65, can you explain the difference between the standard and deluxe heater? You said the deluxe has two ***** on the dash - is one for def/heat and the other is the fan switch?

I was looking to install ac on my 65 I contacted vintage air they seem to think that they have a kit that will handle the heating and cooling of my turck. it might be the way to go they are talking about a universal kit but it is worth looking into

The differences between the two factory systems seems to be insignificant because of the multitude of options available to us today.
The basic system provided for heat and for defrost. The heater core was always hot (much like heater cores today) and a foam-covered flapper blocked air from coming through when no heat was desired. Often, a manual shut-off valve in one of the heater hoses was added to keep the heater core from heating up, as the flapper was not efficient. The single control was through a pull cable/rotating switch assembly on the dash. This cable opened or closed the flapper to allow hot air to flow, and turning the switch operated the fan. Pulling the cable partly out had no effect on heat control except to reduce the total flow of air. You had to reach under the dash to move a lever to re-direct the air to the windshield for defrost. Turning the **** controlled the fan speed; most basic units were single speed but I have seen 2 speed fans on basic heaters.

The deluxe unit had three *****, including the one to control fan speed. The fan control dash **** also pulled out to redirect the air upwards for defrost. The other two ***** are on a bracket below the dash, labeled Temp and Heat. The Heat **** opens a valve in the heater hose on the firewall, letting hot water flow in the heater core. The Temp **** controls another flapper inside the heater box which mixes cooler outside air with air inside the cab. This gives you a modicum of temperature control.

Today, they don't seem to work well, simply because they are not as efficient as what we are used to. Additionally, the foam inside used to help block off or redirect the air is 40 years old, and is pretty much decayed and gone.

At this point I would caution anyone working with these old heater boxes to be EXTREMELY careful with them. They are made of thin fiberglass, and will break easily. They are durable for thier intended use, but they do not stand up well to rough handling. It is the voice of experience here on this one!

Banjopicker66 - I sent you an email to both your email addresses. Not sure why my previous emails haven't gone through.
