Yesterday I looked at the "vehicle certification label" on the door pillar for the tranny code to see what model tranny I have on my 04 Expy 4x4. The tranny code listed there is "W" -- but when I looked that up in the manual, the tranny code W says that's a Dana ZF 5-speed manual tranny. HUH??!??!??!! I double- and triple-checked that I was reading the correct code from the correct location, then I double- and triple-checked that I was reading the tranny codes correctly from the manual. I was expecting either a 4R70W or 4R100. But the manual says these are tranny codes U and E, respectively.
Am I missing something? Either the manual or <gasp> the label on my door pillar are wrong. The one thing I can be sure of is that I don't have a manual tranny. Can I crawl under the truck and find out what kind of tranny I have?
Well I just got the 04 workshop manual and it says the W tranny code is a 4R75W. So I went out to the truck to take a look and sure enough that's what I have. So, the manual is wrong, no surprise there. What's weird is that the shop manual mentions the 4R75W in the specifications at the beginning, and says it corresponds to the W code on the door jamb sticker. But the section that discusses tranny servicing doesn't mention the 4R75W at all, only the 4R100 and the 4R70W. Is the 4R75W mechanically identical to the 4R70W?
