Keyless entry
Keyless entry
I was wondering if there was a way to test a keyless entry unit besides going to the dealership and forking out 80 bucks for them to hook it up to a computer. I have a 1995 Ford F350 crew cab that according to the windowsticker came with keyless entry. I have found the receiver unit under the dash and it is connected. When I bought the truck I did not receive any remotes, but did purchase a couple off ebay that came with programming instructions. My issue is that the truck does not do what it's suppose to when following the instructions. The instructions say to turn the ignition to on and then off 5 times within ten seconds and the door locks should cycle and then you press a button on the remote and it is programmed. My locks don't cycle after the 5 times. I believe that the security system part of the system is functional as my wife found a way to set it off the other day
If there is another way to test or to program remotes I could use a little help. Other wise I'll go buy an after market alarm and keyless entry unit since they cost half as much as what the dealership wants for the unit.

Hmm, I may know down the road how to, I just bought a 96 Eddie Bauer with remote entry/security, and the previous owner lost 1 of the 2 remotes. I was at the dealer a few days ago, and they said my system, even thought it's factory, is third party and they can get me replacement remotes ($80CAD each), but can't program them.
This is interesting though, I didn't know you could program the remotes like that. If you want, I'll try the "turn key on and off 5 times in 10 secs" thing on my truck.
My remote has a lock + arm button, and a unlock + disarm button. I know that some trucks' remotes have a third "panic" button. Even if truck is unlocked, the engine is immobilized, and i need to press unlock/disarm on my remote.

My remote that i am installing now has an OVERRIDE red button and it says to hit this thing 5 times and then the LED will blink 6 times and then you hit a button on the FOB and then it is programmed, but there are different aftermarkets and different ways. My LEXUS had to do that with either doing the ignition several times or the lock and unlock back and forth several times...find out what aftermarket brand yours is and then check their support section on their website or give them a call.
I have a 94 F-150 with factory keyless module mid under the dash. There is an open end 2-pin connector close to the control module under the dash. You have to shorten that pins, then turn ignition On, then press any key on the remote, then turn ignition Off, remove the short link and it is done. You may try that if yours also has such 2-pin connector.

Follow up to my early post, I bought and just recieved a Keyless Remote I bought on E-Bay about a week ago, the FCC number matches the one on my current and only remote that came with my truck. I'm going to try and program it when I get home from work
I never thought I'd be able to easily find a similar remote to mine (I have the rare 2-button remotes, not the 3 and 4 button like everyone else has). The funny thing is.....the remote I bought has a GM sticker on it! It's the exact same shape and size, and if it works I'm tearing off the GM logo (AND BURNING IT).

I can't find the open-end connector with 2 leads that you simply short/close to reprogram the system. I also tried the "cycle the ignition key 8 times in 10 seconds" or whatever it is, it did nothing.
Here is the Keyless Entry/Security system unit, tied up to the base of the steering shaft under the dash.

This is the sticker on the top of the unit, I see no connectors that have to do with triggering a reprogramming of any sort

Here is the new remote (left), and the remote that came with my truck (right).

All of the codes on the back of both remotes are exactly the same, and it looks as if the same sourced manufacturer for these units was the same (who knows who this manufacturer is though
)

I will go now and remote the "FORD - Vehicle Security System" sticker from the unit to see if there's a manufacturer name under that.

For what it's worth, the only thing those pictures have in common with the factory keyless entry that was in my '95 SHO Taurus is the shape of the Ford logo. The SHO's keyless was programmed by shorting the pins together, but I'd say yours is an entirely different animal.
Yeah, my unit was installed by the dealer after purchase it seems. None of the conventional programming methods work.
The person I bought the remote off of gave me these instructions:
1. Open Driver's Door
2. locate programming button under the dash, it's usually black or red
3. insert key into ignition and turn key to the "ON" position, but do not start the engine
4. press and hold down the progamming button, after about 15 seconds the locks will cycle 3 times, continue to hold the programming button down.
5. Press the "Lock" button on each remote you want it to recognize, the vehicle will respond by cycling the locks
6. release the programming button and turn the ignition off. You're now done
1. Enter the vehicle and close all doors, make sure the courtesy light is not on.
2. Perform the following within a 10 second time span
1. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position
2. Using the dash mounted courtesy light switch turn the lights ON-OFF, ON-OFF, ON-OFF pausing 1 second between each rotation.
3. Turn ignition off
3. The locks will now cycle 3 times to indicate vehicle is in programming mode
4. Press the "Lock" button on each remote you want vehicle to recognize, locks will cycle once for each successful recognition
5. When done turn ignition on and then off to exit programming mode
Neither apply/work. LOL. I'm screwed and will probably give up!

The Security unit under your dash has an FCC ID # on it, I cant make it out in the pic, which can be used to identify the manufacturer and obtain programming instructions.
Also in one of the photos there looks to be a circular space under the connections sticker where there may be a hidden button, or maybe its just a screw hole, but you'll have to peek to be sure. Run your fnger over the label and you should be able to feel it. It could be a bad monitor or eyesight on my part... I hate this new acer flat panel we got here at work... yuk

Yeah
The remotes (and probably the control unit) is made by CodeAlarm. I sent them an email and it will be interesting to see if I get a useful response
I believe the circle you see under the sticker is nothing, I already have tried taking the unit apart to look for hidden buttons/switches or short points.

On my 95 f150 my mechanic who is a ford technician gave me an extra remote that he had brand new, we did exactly what germanguy said. We found that connector and touched the two pins and did one remote then the other one. If I'm not mistaken I think you can have up to 4 transmitters. But if you want to add a transmitter you have to program all of them again. I like the power door looks but the alarm is a pita. I have set it off accidentally 3 times in the year I've owned it. Just the other day I took it to the dealer where I bought it cause they gave me free inspections as long as I own it and I was sitting there I took the key out of the ignition and put it in my pocket, then I opened the door and pushed lock on the door, then I called my ride to come get me all while I had the door open I get off the phone and I'm getting ready to get out then the stupid thing starts going off... I had the transmitter in my pocket and I don't think I moved and hit the panic button cause I was still sitting in the truck. I'm sure the alarm is nice and all but is there a way to get rid of it without loosing the keyless entry or is it all too tied in together?
Excellent
I'm happy to say now, that I figured it out
It's kind of embarrasing, so I won't share what happened :P Kinda strange for such a thorough person like me!
Kinda funny that I'm using a GM remote on a Ford Truck though, but don't worry, I tore off the GM logo off that sucker.
