E40D vs 4R7OW

Hey I have a 97 4x4 4.6 w/ 176k miles
It started slippin about a month ago. And I started talkin to transmission shops and they were all in the 1300-1500 range for rebuild w/ hard parts and around a 1 year warranty. Today I bought a Transmission rebuilt to Ford factory specs with a 3 year 36k mile warranty for 1600 with a new cooler for it.
My truck has the 4R70W. What is the difference between the two transmissions, which one is more reliable? Is there different gear ratios in them? Why are there two different automatic transmissions in these trucks?

Well can speak for the E4OD transmission (95 version) I had 95 5.0 4x4 which i put 370,000 miles of severe towing abuse on, the only thing I did to it was change trans fluid every 50k or so, i pulled about 7000lbs well over a 1/3 of its life, I tried to killed it but it refuse to die, ive since sold it , and it is still running and towing. in other words....It was a great tranny , ive now got the 4r70 behind the 5.4 in a 99 super duty and i've only got 98k on it so-far , not bad but still not sure...i'll update you on how it holds up in about 2yrs and another 200K.

On my '97 I replaced the filter and fluid in my 4r70w at 150k even though you're not supposed to at that high miles, but the fluid in there looked like burnt grease so it had to be changed. Trans. worked great till I wrecked at 171k. On my '94 F-150 I had a few years back I had to replace the trans. in it at 148k, and it was an E4OD but it was a used truck so God knows what it went through.

So let me get this straight, if you maintain your tranny per schedule, when it gets to be high mileage you just give up on it? Makes no sense.
