80 f-150 I6

I have an 80 f-150 with a I6 300. I have a bit of problem with it. Do these engines have a timing chain or gears? I had trouble keeping it running. It would bog down and stop running all together. I'd ajust the timing with the distributor it would run fine for a few minutes then back to running like crap. Adjust the distributor again, run fine then like crap again. Now finally tried to start it again to get it moved and a loud pop came from the engine. Tried it again and another pop. Now the motor turns over but won't start. Both crank and cam are turning. However very little to no compression. Actually it jumps to 90 but wont keep. If it were 180 out would it do this? I thought about just changing gears or what ever it had. Please anyone help?

The engine has timing gears. What I think is wrong with your engine comes to me from a recent experience with a mustang with a bent 6 in it. It wass doing the EXACT same thing yours is doing, then one day it wouldn't start. Just a couple of loud POPs every 6-10 engine turns, so I check all the pluges for fire and the were getting it, not like they should of. So of of curiosity, god knows why I wanted to look at the rotor button, I pulled off the distributor cap and took the rotor button off the ople and looked at it on the inside, it was all chewed up. New rotor button, the 'stang runs fine now.
