Tailgate lowering

I want to carry a car in the bed of my '94 F series. Yeah, it's a small, light car, but it fits with the rear tires sitting on the tailgate. There's a ramp in the truck bed and ramps that I use to load the car up in the bed with a winch attached to the front of the bed. With my previous '76 F250, the tailgate had the scissor style gate supports. I used a length of chain in it's place to lower the gate so it would almost touch the bumper and provide a more parallel path for the lower ramps up to the in-bed ramps.

The newer style tailgate uses cable supports. My question is, are there longer cables available that will let the tailgate droop down to the bumper, or do I have to fab my own?

Hi, ford is not the only one to use these cables although I think they use some of the longest ones it might be possible to find longer ones from some other truck.

Jabingb, You may have to use chain again in this application. You may be able to extend the existing cables with some basic cable and crimp connectors from your local hardware store. Just a thought.

Walter,
I'm in Northern CA. What are "Auto Zones". Sounds familiar but can place them.

Thanks JB for the correct name. I keep forgetting that local stores are not everywhere. (Hmmmmmm, wonder why they call themselves "nation-wide" then)

I know what you mean. Driving around the country I noticed once that there are a million different auto parts chains. We havea pep boys, 2 autozones, a parts america, a Napa, and a few small family owned ones here. I have found that pep boys is very proud of most things they have and auto zone usually gives me a better deal.

You can also order parts from Auto Zone on the web. Or you can try Wrenchead.com or carparts.com they might have what you are looking for.

Karl,
Thanks for the lead. The problem that I am running into is that all the sources are asking for year, make and model. I don't know what cable "might" be the appropriate length. The dimension of the original is 21 inches, bolt centers. I want between 23 and 23 1/2 inches. It's OK if the cables don't have quite the right fitting on them, I am going to install them permanently and will adapt whatever I can come up with. Any thoughts?

I would just make my own cables, you can heat off the old fittings with a torch and melt lead into your fitting's with the new cable, swag the ends after you place them so the lead can't be pulled loose, same as for a motorcycle cable.
