4x4 Launch

I was wondering if anyone could tell me about a 4x4 launch. I like to take me truck to the track and it sure does smoke the tires i lose alot of time feathering the throttle to get them to bite. Here in Ky the track is a quarter mile so i surely dont want to have the truck in four wheel drive the whole time, but will it hurt it to take it out of 4x4 at WOT? Thanks for any insight.

i dont think you can disengage the 4 wheel drive at WOT, to disengage it, you would have to back off the throttle to relieve some pressure for it to go back to 2 wheel, and that would cost some time. if i were you, i would just leave it in 4 wheel, just as long as your goin straight youll be fine

ohh yea, about the launch, when your in 4 wheel and have it in drive, hold the brake, bring the revvs up between 1800 and 2000 rpm, and as soon as you let off the brake to go, put the petal down and hold on. thats what seems to be what everyone is doing. i heard dont go past 2000 rpm b/c the tranny will begin to slip, and when you let off the brake and floor it, youll break all fours loose

wont hurt a thing, just as long as you go straight, as soon as you turn you will break the axle shafts,ok maybe not as soon as you turn, but if you turn pretty tight like onto a road, but still, while going 80+, you still dont wanna turn. and you will know when and if you break them....believe me, its not to fun, pretty expensive

My truck has been in 4x4 for very extended periods of time at both low and high speed, both straight and curvy roads. It has seen numerous passes across Jones
Gap at full throttle, in 4x4, with all 4 tires slipping through the curves. Have been to around 125 or so in 4x4, slowing into turns anywhere from 65-90 and full throttle through the back third of the corner. So far, no damage done, other than a hub that decided to grenade at launch once.

Now, I would not recommend anyone else do it- I am in no way saying it is not harmful to the truck, but mine has faced it for almost 18,000 miles now and the 4x4 system still engages just like it was new.

no, i know you wont wreck anything if theres dirt, mud, sand or snow under the front tires, but its when theres pavement or concrete that turning the tires on it will wreck th drivetrain

I was actually referring to pavement and concrete in my last post. My truck rarely sees any off-road, so far the 4x4 on it has been used exclusively as an "on pavement performance" device.

I have taken several 6.0 on hard launches, leave it in drive, hold the brake just as hard as I can and hold the throttle to the floor, about 28lbs of boost, light goes green and let off the brake, doesn't ever break the tires loose or slip the tranny, just slams my head back and launches hard, maybe with a good programmer the tires would break loose, I don't even know if the brakes would hold with a hot programmer, they hardly hold stock. I would think with more power you would better off in second gear, first comes and goes fast with just a stock truck, I would think with 100 more horse power you could just go second and get a little faster time, you would have a lot more boost taking off anyways, anyone ever do this?

Sure Matt, I bet you have seen plenty of "off road" just prior to takeoff in that hotrod!!!! I tried your launch sequence after y'all were first talking about it and MAN, what a rush! I took a friend who has a '99 7.3 with me for another one since he didn't believe that the truck was any faster than his and let him drive..... nothing but Now if I can only get a new exhaust free one........

I just flipped my switch from 4x4 back to 4x2 at the end of the runs as I was coasting down to the pit lane turn off. That seemed to work fine.

i was just wodering how many of you run quarter mile tracks, thats all there is close to me and i believe with the scmt i could get pretty high mph in that distance, also i was wondering if launching in 4x4 is gonna help E.T's since your powering another axle would it be worth it or not

your far better off in 4x4 then running the 1/4 in 4x2, youll just spin the tires in 4x2 at take off, with the torque these things have you wont even feel the second axle. i think 4x4 should actually shave off half a second or even more! off the 1/4
