Angry overheating

hey fellas,
was on the way home on the freeway in my 86 f150 302 fi, when all of the sudden i hear this wierd noise coming from the hood, i look down at the gauges and i am overheating big time.
i pull over and steam is coming from under the hood, i pop the hood and there steam everywhere andwater shooting everywhere coming from the resevore and the resevore is boiling and overflowing.
since i had no water i had no choice to have it towed home.
what do you fellas think?
also, about 2 weeks ago i changed the water pump and the thermastat.

I would guess bad thermostat. Start it up and let it run till it starts getting hot, then squeeze the radiator hose. If it is still real hard, then the thermostat isn't opening. Or just take out the thermostat and see if that fixes the over heat problem, if it does then put a new one in.

Maybe you put the thermostat in backwards? Or did you get a waterpump that pumps the opposite of what you need?

well the thermastat is working because it run kind of on the warm side anyways and when it would get to about were it gonna start running hot, it would all of a sudden jump back down below 190 deg, also what do you mean about the water pump not doing what i wanted it to do.

I know for some engines you can get reverse flow water pumps. I am not sure if there is one for this engine in this year.

But, you said the temp gauge level went up then back down. I would start the truck up when COLD and take off the rad cap. See if after a while the engine coolant is circulating around. If it is then the water pump is fine.

Another thing could be your fan clutch. If it is screwed up then it won't work when your engine gets hot and pull in cooler air. Also, is your fan shroud in place?

if this was the first good run you gave the truck you may have had an air lock in the cooling system

How low on water? A cooling system take around 12-18 quarts of coolant. I would top it up then see how it does. Just keep an eye on the gauge.

make sure your rad. cap is holding specified pressure, if not your water will boil at a lower temp.

ok guys, been messing with the truck latley and i still can't figure it out.
Filled up with water and started it up, shoved my finger in the rad to see if it was flowing, i can feel that it is. kept it running for about 6-8 more mins and i was about to shut it off and all of a sudden i see water flowing out of the resavore, i felt the rad hose to see if it was tight and it felt like it was open so i have no idea what the hell is wrong.
anymore suggestions would help!!!!!!!

Well, lets go all the way back to the beginning. When did this start? What was the original reason for changing the water pump and thermostat?

And how much is coming out of the radiator? You system will normally push out a little coolant when it gets hot because of expansion. Then it should draw it back in as it cools. If your coolant reservoir is overfilled or mounted at a wierd angle, it will overflow even thought there is nothing wrong.

Is the rad. original? Have it flow checked, if it is plugged with corrsion it will never cool properly. It may take a recore or replacement to correct. They can get so bad that aftermarket flushes will not work. Allow your engine to get warm then put your hand flat on the cooling fins feeling for cool spots where the water cannot flow because it is plugged. If you find such spots, replace the rad.

Also look for a continous flow bubbles in the fluid which could indicate a leaking head gasket. This will put lots of heat in a cooling system.
