Does anyone have any ideas for a wall / ceiling covering for garages? Right now I have a waferboard wall covering and just open joists and insulation on the ceiling. I would like to get something like a finished paneling, maybe be plastic laminate, without looking too tacky.
I could go the drywall route but I was looking for something different and that could be done quickly. Any suggestions?
Whatever it is keep it light colored and easily scrubbable. Be nice to be able to attach stuff to it as well, that's something you can't easily do to paneling.
You can also use FRP (Fiberglass reinforced panels) over existing drywall. This material is readily available at home centers (Lowes, Home Depot).
It is generally used in bathrooms and kitchens and is available textures and smooth. these easily clean up with hand cleaner or soft scrub.
You glue it on the wall with liquid nails or contact cement and the joints use an extruded vinyl that slip over the edges to smooth the seams and corners.
It cuts fairly easy with a fine toothed saw blade and can be trimmed with a pair of avaitor snips.
I've used the nials before as well. But they just look 'southern engineered' and get in the way of cleaning the panels. When I genereally do a job, I used contact cement because it can be rolled onto both panels, let dry, then pressed in place. It leaves a nice smooth surface that wont be hard to clean.
What is the fire resistance rating of FRP with and without a sheetrock backing? Do you use 1/2" or 5/8" sheetrock backing for a fire barrier with FRP? I assume that when you use adhesive the FRP is going up over sheetrock. Can the FRP be used alone without some sort of backing material?
