Tow question

I have a small 4X7 utility trailer that I haul my 4 wheeler on. I think that the whole package together with the quad on it may weigh around 1100 lbs. So for all of you in the know.........

Is it safe to tow this with the Overdrive "On"? The tongue weight is about 120 lbs.

I have a 2001 F250 5.4

Thanks all!

Yes, you can tow it with the overdrive on. I doubt you'll even feel that small amount of weight behind you.

I have a 94 F250 460 4.10E4OD. I tow an 8,000# travel trailer and a small utility trailer like you have. I always drive in OD UNLESS the tranny is hunting gears(shifting in and out).

I almost can't feel the utility trailer and don't even think about the tranny.

One word of warning on these utility trailers, maybe two words...

The tires these trailers use are absolute crud. Very low weight rating about 500-600# I think. If you overload even a little, you Will get a blowout. I have had two blowouts with both original cheesy tires. It is way too easy to overload these trailers. A scoop of compost will do it, even half a scoop will do it if you get some rain. First chance you get, go out and buy some tires with a better rating I have Green Ball with a 950 rating. I think all the tires are made in China, but so far the Greenballs have worked good for me, even overloaded.

These trailers in general seem to rust pretty easy, especially the lights, so check the running lights every once in awhile and clean up or protect the connections. Also dogs love the exposed wiring, so if you have a dog, don't worry about the connections, they are already gone.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

Thanks you guys,

Jim,

This is a homemade trailer that I built using an old F100 front end, so it actually has full size tires on it already. This thing is built like a tank. I don't think I will have any problems with it. As for the dog........... I built in a little saftey box for the wires that the mutt can't get into. Thank you for all the info!

Tim
