I purchasrd my A/F meter from Summit Racing but Advnaced Auto and NAPA have them. I like the Bar Graph type better then the dial style.

These are not much more than a light show for your dash. They offer almost no real usefullness compared to a proper wide band O2 set up.

I saw a mixture meter in autozone just the other day. As I recall, it had a seven segment led display with one green light at center to indicate a balanced mixture. Then three leds on either side to indicate more lean or more rich. I'm sure it's not very scientific or specific like an O2 sensor, but it should be good enough for moderate tweaking.

Those air/fuel ratio sensors use O2 sensors to show you the air/fuel ratio. I guess what you guys are saying is that a standard O2 set-up will find the ratio and adjust for you, but that would only work for EFI, right? The O2 sensor just tells the computer to increase/decrease injecter pulse width. Since carbs don't have this system, i think an air/fuel ratio monitor would be a good idea to fine tune a carb. I have seen one made by Edelbrock in the Summit Racing catalog or JEG's that uses LED's and looks pretty nice. I also think Auto Meter makes some analog air/fuel gauges.

The problem with all the affordable a/f monitors is that they are only as accurate as a factory O2 sensor, which in only acurate at 14.7:1. It can tell if it's above or below that ratio, but can't tell how far. It's just a guess. A wide band O2 can accurately identify all ratios within the normal running range, which is what you really need.

Ok thanks to all. Well I had and O2 meter used to tuning Natural gas engines, unfortunatelly it doesn't read anything if engine is overfueled (Too rich) of course, there is no Oxigen to read.

Fallowing recomendations I'm planing start with a simple O2 sensor and a digital tester, but my new question is:

An O2 sensor 4 wire can work with lead added fuel?? I'm asking because here in Venezuela we have gasoline 91 Octane lead AND 95 Octane Unlead and is easier get 4 wire sensors than simple 1 wire but I don't know if it can be damage by fuel...

Any comments?

Leaded fuel will kill an O2 sensor.

Good info, thanks. How about an EGT? Seems there should be a way to translate temp into rich/lean.

I was tinking that BUT... there are a lot of engines from different brands running in Venezuela built betwen 1997 and 2000 that are running using 91 octane fuel leaded and no problem yet... (Of course Catalizer was not installed) Is there any different O2 sensor for leaded fuel?

Donno. As far as I know all 02's are instantly destroyed with leaded.

Do a search using "EGT". There is an older thread showing temps for different mixtures and how to set it up. I am considering going the EGT route myself.
