hello, im the guy putting an 88 mustang roller 5.0 into an 87 f-150 non roller 5.0.
ive been told not to use the stock mustang cam in a truck cause its for high rpm horses....so i just got a crane powermax 2020 cam (formerly compucam) and i was wondering if anyone else is running this in a truck and how it performs.
the specs are .530 .530 lift, 262 270 duration and 112 degree lobe....oh im doing a mass air conversion too with an 89 mustang computer so it wont mess up the speed density system. ive got a cold air intake and headers for it......thanks for any info! (aod with stock rear)
I'm thinking about doing the same thing but with a milder Crane cam, 364211. Its keeps the old firing order too. That's what Crane recommnded to use with the stock EFI truck set up. I am transplanting a 91 Cougar H0 into my 85 F-150.
Now do you have to get new roller lifters when swapping cams?
The Mustang roller does lack a little down low, but makes up for it in mid and high rpms. One thing you may want to look into is to see if you have to use a steel dist. gear with that cam. I think the factory gears are broonze and a roller cam (that requires a steel dist. gear) will chew it up and send the particles into your oil system.
If your motor had a roller cam to start with , it's got a steel dist gear. Ford NEVER used bronze gears on production engines. Flat tappet motors had cast iron dist gears and have to be changed to steel for a roller cam.
