Question Performance Opinions

Hey All,
I usually hang out in the 73-79 forum. I just recently purchased a 2000 F150 4x4 with the 5.4 L V8

I am not too keen on the newer stuff, so I have a couple of questions about some performance mods...

1. Is purchasing a K&N (or similar) cold air induction worth the 200+ bucks?

2. The truck has the factory tow package. Can dual exhaust be run out the rear? It looks like the spare and the hitch may not allow it??

This is all I have right now. I am looking to increase HP and overall fuel economy. Right now, I'm getting about 17 mpg.

Any thoughts and suggestions are always welcome!!

Thanks,
Mike

I'd say that 15-17 mpg is pretty much average for a 5.4L F150, and odds are that you won't do much better than that.

On the exhaust, any exhaust shop can accomplish what you want.

Most feel that the intake helps, others don't. Personally, I like my MAC Intake off of this site.

I'd get all the maint. stuff done first (filters and fluids, sparks if you have over 60K mi), and then look towards a Preadator Tuner first.

I've got dual exhaust by flowmaster with OEM towing package and tire carrier, no problems.

upgrades

yes you can put a exhaust system on a 2000 f-150 no problems. i have put the following "performence" parts on my truck and have seen results in all- "superchip", K&N cold air intake w/filter and Flowmaster exhaust 40 series w/3in tips. I see a, what i would call, dramatic decrease in gas milage when the chip is in (15 to 12) but if you want 20hp that you can feel go with the chip too. all n all when i installed each of the parts i noticed a difference, either or both, in performence and sound. to give you a perspective on how much difference it made for me, my 0-60 (5.4L) before i did the upgrades was 9seconds now it's right at high 7's low 8's!- so to loose a whole second is always a plus.
