DIY Beadlocks

Has anyone installed weld on beadlocks themselves and what did you think? I've seen the Rockstomper kits, but they look heavy with the two 1/4 inch plates for each wheel. What does everyone know and where are some places to get the kits?

i have never done a set myslef but have thought very seriously about it. although if i am gonna get beadlocks i want the 2 piece rim that comes apart with the PVC insert... to me that's the best way to go.

I agree, get the PVC insert.

Stazworks.com has the PVC insert type, I dont know if they will go with other rims beides theirs. You might also check USA6x6.com . they are both helpful places and are willing to help.

Weight is one sacrifice you do have to make if you go to a beadlock wheel. I think I weighed the USA6X6 wheels at 52 pounds each (with inserts) as opposed to the 25 pound weight of the alloy rims. The DIY's are easy enough to do but what I don't like is that you can still lose your inner bead. While it's not near as likely to go as an outer bead is it's still a weak spot.

I've always wonder about that isn't the inside lip the same as the outside one? and if your just making the outside a beadlock what's to stop the inner part of the tire to pop the bead and come off.

Unless you wanted to buy 8 sets and do a double-beadlock, and REALLY blow something out everytime you change a tire...

Well of course when i can afford it i could just get 2 sets of those internal bead locks they are about the same price as bealock rims but it locks the bead on both side of the rims and they are street legal to boot.

Yea, I like the idea of internal beadlocks as well. They seem to be a very well thought out idea. I would assume that the internal beadlocks would be just as good as the external style beadlocks.

From what i have read on them they are and much easier when changing a tire cause all you have to do is let the air out compared to unbolting 20 something bolts or nuts off an external beadlock. With internal beadlocks all you have to do is drill one hole for the stem and that's it compared to cutting and then tig or mig welding your external beadlocks on to your rims.

I agree that the double beadlock with the PVC insert is much better for locking the tire onto the rim than a singe outer beadlock. I'd like to put a beadlock on the wheels I already have, though. Does anyone know of beadlock kits out there other than the Rockstomper ones?

There's a few others out there. Of the ones I've looked at I like Rockstomper the best.

Thanks for the help ivanribic. Helpful as always. By the way, I installed the 4 inch skyjacker lift and 38's on on the 79 F250. It rides better, but not as soft as I'd like, but it flexes at least twice as much as it did before.

Check out this beadlock
www.secondair.com.au

Should be fairly light weight and should also balance well.
