difference in 98 and 99 5.4L's?

I have a 98 F-150 with the 5.4, and am looking to to start adding some horses here soon.

My main question is, what is the difference between the 98 and 99 5.4L's? I notice they're rated higher HP, but, what's the design differences? Are they suttle enough to order genuine ford parts for a 99 and place onto my 98, or are the major design changes to where I'm better off buying different heads, cam, etc?

My goal is to get my 5.4 up to the 280-300hp mark. I know that exhaust, K&N, and a chip only bump it to around +20 hp, so, if I could somehow "upgrade" my 5.4 to a 99 5.4, the +20hp with the other parts would put me close to where I want.

Thanks in advance!

The 99-03 have PI heads. Performance Improved. They have revised intake ports and a little larger camshafts. due to the better breathing, they have 260hp instead of 235hp.
They also use different pistons so when installing PI heads on a non PI shortblock, the compression jumps up to around 10.5 to 1. Not real pump gas friendly. The PI heads must have an improved, smaller combustion chamber as well.

Personally, I wouldn't waste my time on trying to make a non-Pi into a PI just to gain some horses. IMO, the time and cost, and effort would make a blower a viable option.

This particular blower will run ~$3500.

I've seen some others in the low $2K range too.

My $.02

I must say, the blower sounds nice. What other mods would I be looking into doing as a neccisity if I were to add the blower? Or, is it a bolt on, no other mods?

My guess is that I would have to completely re-do the exhaust to move more air, cams, heads, etc. Not sure; never installed a blower.

The Ken Belle blower is pretty much a slap on deal. Here is a thread that you may find interesting:

If you go this route, I'd definately look at up grading your exhaust and maybe some headers down the line.
