Has anyone ever swapped out the steering wheel in a 98-01 ranger? I saw that there are some fairly cheap leather ranger and mustang wheels on Ebay, and thought maybe I could get one and swap it out. Suposedly the mustang ones fit too. I guess the real question I have is how to remove the airbag without it blowing up in my face. I imagine after I get that off, it ought to be pretty straight forward, especially since i don't have cruise control. Any info on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I just did some work on a vehicle with an airbag for the first time, a '93 Crown Vic. The manual says (on that vehicle) to dis connect the negative battery cable, then the positive and then ground the positive cable for 1 minute to discharge the airbag back-up power supply (which is to still provide power to the airbag system in case of an accident that cuts the battery cables.) Then, working from the side so that you are not in a line with the airbag, unbolt it from the wheel and slide it out, then disconnect the plug and, holding it facing away from you carry over to the workbench or whatever and set it down facing up. I had no problems, didn't have it blow up in my face or anything. Just treat it with a little respect. -TD
