Can someone please tell me how to adjust or tighten the steering box.
I have an '85 F-150 351W 4x4 and the steering is very eratic. The front end is tight the 31'' tires are new & balanced, its had an alignment,& i put in dual stabilizer bars. Also the rag joint was replaced.
Yet the steering is still all over the road...this leads me to the steering box....
With all that work you put into the front end.
I feel as though you just replace the steering box. That is one of those things that you don't want to play around with. because you will never get it back to what the specs call for.
Would you put Duck tape on a helment that your gonna wear or just buy a new one? In the long run you would be better of parting with the cash. Good luck..
Make sure the steering wheel is centered first. There should be a stud sticking out of the top of the box with a nut locking it in place. Loosen the nut and turn the stud clockwise a little bit. Then try it. Go a little at a time. You might find if you get it too tight, the steering wheel won't want to come back to center after a turn. This is too tight, and if you still have play when you loosen it a little, replace the box, or live with it.
I didnt know anything about the steering box...im new to all this..
but you think that the professionals that have tried to figure out what is wrong with the steering could figure it out!
I dont even know for sure if it is the steering box.
Simple really, Either your steering box is screwed up, The steering box is lose or missing some bolts(eratic steering is really bad when that happens), or there is bent in the front end(tie rod ends, sway bar, etc)
Any steering box properly adjusted, should allow about a hands width of play at the wheel. If it needs to be adjusted tighter than that - 'at there sucker is most likely shot!!!
I'd be pricing a rebuild if I were you, and thinking about how to purge the system.
