Dave,
Do yourself a favor and pickup a linksys router/firewall. The problem with these high speed lines are that your PC is basically sharing a network with others and there is practically nothing from stopping someone from getting into your system. These routers cost about $90 and they provide ample security to keep the riff raff out.
I almost forgot.. an added bonus of a router/firewall is that they allow you to connect more PC's to share the line by setting up a small home network.
Amen on the Linksys router! I'm using one myself. Not only does it allow several computers in the home to share the connection it provides physical isolation from the Internet. Outside systems can't even see yours unless you run a server task!
Combine it with the free Zone Alarm firewall software and you've got near bullet-proof protection (just remember to update your anti-virus software every week).
I'm piped into a local school via DSL (1.5mbit down/768up) to do administrative work on the servers and LAN. I had to set up a Linux box for routing because most/all of the consumer level routers don't handle IPX which is used for Netware. But yes, DSL rocks. Unfortunately, the Oregon PUC has, in their warped minds, decided that Qwest can start charging more for LADA circuits (dry copper pair.) So, my $23 DSL connection may be over $150 a month after the first of the year :-P
