I occasionally get a check engine light. The codes are P0171 and P0174(right bank too lean, left bank too lean). I reset the codes and tightened the plenum(which is the only thing common to both banks). About a month later it does it again.
This started around the start of winter, and I noticed that it seems to reoccur when the weather turns cold. The last time I added a can of fuel injector cleaner(which would be common to both banks also). I thought that fixed it until today, then it happened again today.
It runs fine and there are no other codes that ever show up.
I had some of the same on a 2.3 of course only one code left bank lean. I moved the plug to the o2 sensor around from the upper side as I was to involved in other stuff to
get under and pull the connection apart and check it. That seemed to help for a couple
of days. It warmed up and away went the problem, back to cold and so is the code.
I guess after this storm maybe it's time to get under. Unless someone else has the answer.
I have a 97 4.0 & have been changing parts externally rather than tear inrto the plenum. I have been fighting this for months & finally fixed it today. The light was coming on after every couple starts in the end. I took the plenum off today to replace the orings that seal the plenum to the fuel rail & found that the gasket under the fuel rail had been sucked in on the rear drivers side corner. I could only find this gasket at the Ford dealer. I have sprayed all around this with carburetor cleaner in the last couple months & could never detect a change. Another thing I hadn't realized, which is obvious on disassembly, is that the plenum nuts hold the plenum down & the bolt that the nut goes on holds the fuel rail down. The plenum could be tight to the rail & the fuel rail loose to the intake. I hope this helps somebody else. It isn't that bad a job on the whole. Later, Jay

I had my check engine light come on a year or two ago. The code was that one of the banks was running lean. Can't remember what the fix was at the time. Then it came on this past January '05. I don't have a lot of tools/know how, but I bought a Car Chip, and the code was "left bank running lean". Had to take it to a mechanic. The manifold gasket had a leak. That was about $475 to fix.
