I am looking at a intake and exhaust. I saw MAC is the best intake but what headers and exhaust i go with. I am not sure how far i am going with the truck but any help would be great.
anyone know what rear comes in the 4.2L and where i can get a LSD
MAC Headers are also IMO the best. They are equal length ceramic coated shorty headers for $300 a set. You can get them at macperformance.com.
If you are going for performance, get a Flowtech Warlock. They are a straight through design and are louder than Flowmasters. For more information on the mufflers just do a search for them on internet.
The rear end depends...you either have a 3.55 rear end or a 3.08 rear end with a 31 spline gear. Mike at Texas Motorsports can hook you up with a set of gears and LSD for a good deal. He is sponsored at v6f160.com.
also, check out eBay. gears are pretty standard, around 175-200 anywhere you go. But the ford t-lock on ebay can be found, used, pretty cheap. I'd say between 50-100
have fun dude, truck wrenchin' is what it's all about!
Hmmm, you're the first person I've heard of saying that they have a 3.31 rear end, but that's not to say it's not true. Either way, you can always upgrade. If you upgrade, most people get some Mustang Gears because they have the exact same 8.8 rear end...you just gotta make sure the gears are 31 spline and not 28 spline. Some Mustangs (and these are the 3.8 mustange 97 - 03 we are talking about) have the 28, so just make sure you get it right the first time.
Also, if you get 4.10's or higher, you will DEFINATELY need an LSD or Locker. An LSD would be my suggestion for everyday driving. Lockers are more for strict racing. Any more questions...btw, I say all this from my own personal experience. I have 4.10's and the are for a Mustang, and they work perfect. I actually have 0 rear end noise.
I checked the window sticker on my truck (I saved it from when I bought the truck new) and it says 3.31 rear end ratio. I checked it to make sure I wasn't throwing the wrong numbers out there. Is this an uncommom ratio??
Also what would be the benefit of adding a Mustang 8.8 rear end??
Better performance??
i will check that.....has anyone done a fuel filter on the truck....i am not sure where it is. also i was wondering what kind of fuel economy you guys get....I am getting 10 mpg and trying to figure out why.
I believe the fuel filter is along the inside of the frame rail on the drivers side.
As for fuel economy I am getting about 16 in the city. While on the highway I am getting about 19 mpg. My truck has a Flowmaster 40 series original flow si/do. It also has a Mac Air intake. Other than that it is stock.

Yes, that's where it is, and you'll need filter scissors to get it out. I don't know what size off hand.
Homer, the transfer case is on a 4x4 only, so assuming he has a 4x4, he can check what his gear ratio is on it? I don't really know, so if so I learned something new.
From my experience you need to check on the differential sticker (not sure exactly where it is) somewhere on the rear end differential. If not there, check somewhere on the drive shaft?
I've actually just never heard of that gearing before...but that doesn't mean it's not common. Most people I know of have the 3.55 gears. The rest have 3.08 gears. But I'm sure there are more ratios than that.
Also, on the Mustang gears...
It won't benefit you to get the same kind of gears you already have. Upgrading to a different ratio is what benefits you...but it also has its downside. If you go from 3.55 (or whatever) to 4.10's, you engine will rev faster throught the RPM range, and your acceleration will increase quite a bit, but if you don't get LSD with it, you will more than likely just spin through first if you floor it. (If you just can't afford limited slip, get some traction bars) The downside is that you will accelerate faster, but your high end will be less powerfull and you top speed will decrease. Also, your MPG's will suffer a little. I went from a steady 15.5 MPG with 3.55's to about 13 MPG with 4.10's/LSD. Does that make more sense?
Also, if you go from like 3.55 to 3.08, your acceleration will be worse, but your high end will be a little better, and your MPG's will be better. So, 3.55 is like the "middle man" for our trucks.
Our V6 fuel economy IS crap...that's just the way it is IMO. The BEST I've heard of is getting about 20-22 mpg's on the highway. I'm no where close to that. My best mpg before my mods was about 15.5 mpg's.
can anyone list the sites i can get a LSD at. I saw one on ebay but it is a 28 spline? I got the MAC intake.....the only thing i did not like is that the tube is a little short causing it not to sit right. other than that it was quick and easy and the truck definitly has a bit more power.
I was looking at getting a new truck but it looks like i am going to hold on to this. I know that the truck has a crossover type pipe undernieth. does anyone make a upgrade performance pipe for that with headers and exahaust.
about how long does the 4.2l usally last. mine has about 130k on it. I am just trying to figure on when i am going to do the motor
