I have had the same problem with my 97 Explorer. The original default code, believit or not is on the Explorer. Look in the access panel in the rear cargo area where the Jack and rear wiper fluid resvouir is. Behin that is a black computer module with a white sticker. That white sticker has the default password on it. You need a good flashlight and a lot of patience to read it though due to how far back box is in rear quarter trim panel.
Note: Everytime you disconnect battery, the keyless entry system defaults to original code on sticker. So you have to reprogram it with your code everytime you disconnect battery. I no longer use it, because if you have a aftermarket alarm, it will not disable alarm, and when you open door, alarm goes off.
