need help with my cab swap

I ve got my 74 f250 that im going to start swapping the cab from a 77 f350 2wd with an auto tranny onto my 74 f250 4x4 4speed. i only have my basic hand tools a couple power tools, me and my lazy brother. what steps do i take in replacing this cab. and also what would it take to swap the 4 speed for the auto?

well i've never dealt with a cab swap, but what i have looked at is that there is a lot of work to do it. there's a lot of stuff under that dash, but once that part is done it's only a matter of the cab-frame mounts and the front fenders, and mabey some other things in the engine compartment, that i cant think of right now. sorry i cant be more help!!

as far as the tranny goes, the tail shaft is different and, of course, all of the linkage's (shifting, kick down) the tail shaft needs to be able to mount the transfer case shifter pivot. are the engines the same?? if not the bell housing will probably need to be changed. you may want to invest in some more tools, some of the bolts under that 74 are pretty tough to get to and to get loose. some of it will just be some trouble shooting, so good luck and let us know how it goes or if you need anything else.
good luck

Talking Cab swap

I recently put a '78 F-350 cab on a 74 high boy 4x4. the f-250 had the standard width frame but the 74 "high boy" had a narrow frame, that added a little to the swap. The one ton had the mounts on the inside of the frame rail, like the highboy. The 2x4 has the cab mounts on the outside of the frame. This isn't that big of a deal as you can drill the holes and plug the others.there is no room for a standard fuel tank in the rear so I turned a 19 gal. tank sideways and installed it under the bed. My 78 cab didn't have a tank in the cab, as with the 4x4. If you don't try to do it all in one day you will have a lot of fun. It took my a couple of months in my back yard.

I removed my cab on my 74' f250 highboy recently. Since I am restoring it, I took the hood, outer and innner fenders off. All the connections are plugs and if you take your time you can pull the entire harness in 1 piece. I used an engine hoist to take my cab off. I laid 2 2x6's flat 1 on top of the other and then put 2 short 6x6's inside the cab under the roof in the front of the door frame. One on each side of the middle roof support (take your headliner off). Then just put the end of the hoist in the middle of the truck and up she goes. As far as drilling the holes I took a short bolt that matches the cab bolts and drilled a size F hole through the center (F is 1 size larger than a .25" drill bit). Put that bolt in the bottom of the cab mount and use a long 1/4" drill bit to drill up through the cab. Use a 1 3/4" hole saw and cut the holes on the top (you go through 2 layers of steel), then drill your final diameter bolt hole. This really isn't complicated, you just need some sockets and a engine hoist. Very easy.
