Question Fuel injected throttle body

I have a 1985 F-150 Super cab truck and was wondering if I can get rid of the 4 BBL carb and install a fuel injected throttle body? Anyone have any experience with this? Where can I find the parts? I went to the Holley web site and they show a "Commander 950" but I don't know if this will work with my engine. Thanks for any input you can give me!

The Holley Kits should come with everything you need to install the system. Beware that they do not play well with AOD transmissions, so if you have one you may want to explore other options. I have never installed any, but have done a lot or reading about it, and unfortunately I have the AOD in my F100.

Thanks Mach,

I have searched the net and there is nothing definitive to explain exactly what I need to complete the project, or what throttle body kit will fit my 5.8L engine. I only get about 8 to 10 miles to the gallon with the Holley 4bbl. It's a great truck and has served me well, I just want to make some improvements. Also Holley lists no price on the product and none of the auto parts web sites list any price either. Maybe I am looking at the wrong pages or not searching in the right areas.

I don't believe I have automatic overdrive on this truck. The previous owner hauled a lot because it has F-250 overloads and a low gear ratio. (I hope i described that correctly) I can detect three shift sequences when driving and it tachs 3.2 k at 60 mph.

If you want to do this to improve your mpg, and haven't bought anything, I think I would just leave it the way it is. These trucks from the '80's don't get very good gas mileage, even with f.i.

Bill1958,

Thanks for the reply. I don't really care for the Holley carb it requires a lot of maintenance. I find myself adjusting the thing frequently and the automatic choke is a big headache. From sticking floats to bad power valves ect... it just requires a lot of attention. Now the carb is acting up again. It keeps blowing the manifold gasket every 6 months and I am smelling gas at an idle. I was thinking the "F I", system would provide more power less maintenance and improved mileage and performance. Even if I get a few more miles to the gallon it will make a difference especially with today's gas prices. A friend of mine put a "F I" system on his V-6 Chev truck and he went from 12 MPG to 26 MPG. I don't expect that much improvement but maybe from 8 - 10 up to 14 - 16 MPG would be nice.

I am open to suggestions and I appreciate your comments, I don't have my mind completely made up. I have even thought about getting a salvage engine that has an F I system and putting it in my truck. That's a lot of work though... because computers, fuel tanks, harnesses, all have to accompany the newer motor. Not to mention all the little problems that can arise. I appreciate all your suggestions.

I think your friend is pulling your leg. That would be a 100% increase. He's probably not filling up completely or got the mileage wrong. Your in the ballpark, about 13-14 is what you can expect with a 5.8. If mpg isn't the concern, just ditch the Holley and get a rebuilt from an aftermarket store; Rockauto is good.

if your engine is less than 275 hp you can use the Holley Pro-jection system
part # 502-20s. It is a 2bbl injection system with its own ECU and fuel pump. It can be purchased at partsamerica website it is $782.88. Don't know if it worth the money or not, but it may make things easier as far as adjustments and stuff.

Mach,

Thanks, I found that site too. I don't know what the horsepower rating is on this motor. The price is right up my alley. I was planning about $1000.00 so this is a little less. I have done a lot of reading about the system but the information I seek is not online. The sites claims it will work on a Ford V-8 4bbl carburetor but I have found if it doesn't specifically state my truck, type the parts wont work. Many trips to the parts store have taught me this!! I appreciate yours and everyone's input, Big Thanks.
