wiring a tachometer

Hey guys i want to wire a tach to my truck. it is a 98 2.5l xl 2wd. The instructions say to run the white wire to some sort of lamp. and for the red wire to be wired to power only when the ignition is on? I know where to hook the green and back wire too, but the rest of this is confusing to me.

The red wire can hook to something like a radio power wire, or do you have some of those power ports(look like cigarette lighter plugs) that cut on and off with the key? You could get behind one of them and splice into the wire, or you can try your luck finding a switched power source in the fuse box.

I assume the white wire is for nighttime illumination. You can check this by hooking a battery charger to the white lead, and the - of the battery charger to the ground of the tach. The dial light will light up. If this is what the white wire is for, you need to find a wire that goes to one of the dash lights, and tie into that. Probably the easiest place will be down low, on a bulb that illuminates a light switch or something.
