tailight wire harness

I thought I was slick,I purchased a new aftermarket body wiring harness. Fuse panel, wires, instructions and etc. At a swap meet cheap. $ 100.00 It looks like a nice well constructed unit. But a few weeks after I got home. I began looking it over. And I found one problem, that I will have to deal with. In the harness tail section. It has 2 wires going to each of the tail lights. One for the running lights and the other works the right, left turn and brake lights. Thats cool on most trucks. But my brake light and turn lights are diffrent lights. Matter fact the brake light has a red lens and the turn has a amber lens. I did notice the kit has a extra wire in the tail section,to hookup to a third brake light. I was thinking maybe since I do not have a third brake light, I could use it for each of my brake lights and the other wire for my right and left turn lights. If I can figure out were the brake and turn hookup together. They must. Other wise how do the barke and turn work on the same bulb. Any ideas ???????????

I'll give this a guess. Yes you can use the wire for the 3rd brake light to power your rear red brake lights. The brake and turn signals get sent to the lead to each rear brake light from the turn signal switch. IF the turn signal is not on the brake signal is sent through to the rear bulb. If the turn signal is on the brake signal is blocked and the turn signal is sent back. Try removing the brake feed to the turn signal switch. I bet that will do it for you.

Yes, the above is correct. Hook the left and right turn/brake wires you have now to the amber lights. Hook the extra third brakelight wire to both rear red lamps. If you leave it this way, everything will work correctly except when you hit the brakes, both amber lights are going to cut on. So to fix this, find the wire that comes from the brake switch to the turnsignal switch, cut it before it goes into the turnsignal switch and put some tape on it. Then you will be good to go.
