I used my spare today and fell victim to the winch going down but not going back up. Not sure if I spun it the wrong way or what. As such I searched this forum and saw everyone else's many many problems with this winch. Since they are so fragile, I'm hesitant to even go through the effort of replacing it (junkyard or new).
Has anyone found an aftermarket 'manual' spare tire holder? Or is there a cable or ratchet tie-down configuration that would work?
After working in the tire buisness for several years, I've seen all kinds of mangeled spare winches.
Generally speaking a new one is the best route. Often people overtighten the spare winch and it puts extra loading on the gears in the winch. It should be snug, but not so tight that you need a cheater to loosen it.
